CRI听力:UN Says IS Group Suspected of Genocide

2015-03-20来源:CRI

The United Nations is now requesting court proceedings against the Islamic State move forward for the militant group's alleged attempt to commit genocide in trying to wipe out the Yazidi minority in Iraq.

In a report based on interviews with more than 100 alleged victims and witnesses, the U.N. Human Rights Office is now calling on the UN Security Council to refer the matter to the International Criminal Court for potential prosecutions.

Chief U.N. investigator Suki Nagra:

"No community has been spared in Iraq from IS violence including the Yazidis, the Christians, Turkmens, Sabea-Mendeans, Kaka'e, Kurds, Shi'a and indeed the Sunni. Essentially what we're seeing is the rich ethnic and religious diversity in Iraq that's been shattered completely."

The UN also notes a number of mass graves have been uncovered in areas recently retaken by Iraqi government forces from the Islamic State.

The same analysis says the Islamic State often treats captured women and children as "spoils of war," often subjecting them to rape and sexual slavery.

But at the same time, the new UN report also suggests Iraqi security forces and affiliated militias "may have committed some war crimes" while battling the insurgency, including killings, torture and abductions.

The U.N. Human Rights Council launched its inquiry in September after the Islamic State seized large swathes of northern and western Iraq.
