CRI听力:Britain to Counter Extremism
Britain's current Home Secretary has been stumping ahead of the forthcoming election, saying her administration is going to take steps to try to counter Islamist extremism.
Theresa May has gone on-record saying this may include investigations into alleged Sharia courts said to be operating in the country.
She also says a re-election of her government will include a crackdown on incendiary Islamic preachers.
"Islam is entirely compatible with British values and our national way of life while Islamist extremism is not. And we must be uncompromising in our response to it. Because extremism is not something that can just be ignored. It cannot be wished away. It must be tackled head on"
Britain is among a number of countries in Europe which has seen a rise in fears about the so-called spread of Islamism.
It's estimated around 600 UK passport holders have joined the Islamic State.
They include "Jihadi John," who is believed to have been raised in London.
He's the man who has been seen on video beheading at least 3 hostages.
