CRI听力:China Responds to G7 Statement on Maritime Disputes

2015-04-18来源:CRI

China has urged relevant countries to act in a manner conducive to regional peace and stability around issues related to the South China Sea.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei made the remarks after foreign ministers from the Group of Seven issued a statement against construction of China's artificial islands within its territory in the South China Sea.

"The construction is conducted within China's sovereign territory, it is reasonable, understandable and legal, and it is not targeting or affecting any other country. We hope other nations can put this issue into perspective."

Hong says China holds a consistent and clear stance on resolving maritime disputes with neighboring countries.

He notes that China advocates for all disputes related to the South China Sea to be addressed through negotiation.

Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai earlier said that China's buildup of its capabilities in the South China Sea aims to serve the interests of maintaining security, stability and freedom of navigation there.

"We always hope for peace and stability on the South China Sea as it's just at the doorsteps of China. Nobody likes chaos at their doorsteps. We are unable to interfere with what the others do, but we oppose anyone who endeavors to make trouble on the South China Sea."

The Chinese diplomat adds that the facilities there mainly aim to provide shelter and services, such as navigation aid and meteorological observation, for ships of both Chinese and foreign origin.

He defends China's construction of military facilities in the area, saying that these are for purely defensive purposes.

The envoy notes that China is determined to safeguard its sovereign and maritime rights, but will exercise restraint in handling disputes with others.
