CRI听力:"Fight of the Century" between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao Takes Place
Fans worldwide are anticipating the upcoming fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, where two of the most prominent boxers of this generation will lock horns for the welterweight championship.
CRI's Fu Yu has more on what is being called the biggest fight of the century.
Pacquiao weighed in 145 pounds in front of a massive crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, while Mayweather hit the scales at 146 pounds for the scheduled 12-round megabout.
Undefeated Mayweather was the favourite for what has been billed as the 'Fight of the Century', with 47 wins and 26 knockouts.
His opponent Pacquiao says the fight will be a good one.
"This is a great, great responsibility for me to give the enjoyment to the fans and this is for me I believe that the fans deserve it tomorrow, the fans deserve to have a good fight."
Jay Rood, vice president of MGM's sports betting book, says the fight will be a historic event for the state of Nevada and expects it to become the highest-grossing prize fight of all-time.
"We are already at the point of the third biggest fight ever booked here at the MGM Grand. I would imagine that we would be surpassing the biggest fight that we have ever booked, that would be Mayweather-Canelo. I think what we are going to do to this fight is 2.5 times larger than what we have ever done with a boxing match in the state of Nevada."
The sold-out weigh-in event and the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown shows boxing still brings nearly unmatched electricity to the sport.
The fight is drawing attention and will benefit boxing in the long run, according to Bob Arum, one of the promoters on the fight.
"To be realistic, Mayweather and Pacquiao are 38 and 36. the lifespan in the sport is going to be short, we have to recognize that. But, in the wings there are tremendously talented young people, young fighters who are going to be marquee and who people are going to fall in love with."
Mayweather could earn as much as 180 million US dollars from the fight, while Pacquiao can expect 120 million.
