CRI听力:US to Assist Sri Lanka in Reform Process: Secretary of State
The United States says it will provide technical assistance to Sri Lanka in its reform process and send teams to visit the country in order to foster closer cooperation between the two sides.
The remarks were made after US Secretary of State John Kerry's meeting with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera in the country's capital of Colombo.
He notes that Sri Lanka has shown progress in several areas over the past few months, including creating a more accountable government.
"So, Sri Lanka is at a pivotal point. Peace has come but true reconciliation will take time. Institutions of governance are gaining strength but further progress needs to be made."
The Sri Lankan foreign minister says the discussions will provide an opportunity for both sides to understand their respective priorities and heighten the existing close and friendly relations.
Kerry's visit has made him the first U.S. Secretary of State to Sri Lanka in 43 years.
