CRI听力:UN Expert: China's Green Strategy Conducive to Global Sustainable Development
Sheng Fulai, the head of the economic research unit of the United Nations Environment Program, hailed China's ecological civilization approach for redefining the global discourse on green economy and sustainable development.
Sheng says China's model of ecological transformation is unique and innovative, and has also inspired the international community.
"The Chinese concept of ecological civilization has made an impact to the global discourse on sustainable development. It covers the environmental, social, economic as well as political and cultural aspects of development."
Chinese government launched the ecological civilization strategy aiming to promote economic growth and protect vital ecosystems.
Sheng told reporters that the strategy has spurred transformation of institutions to help promote transparency and accountability in management of China's natural resources.
"Local officials in China are held accountable for the state of environment in their jurisdiction thanks to the political dimension of ecological civilization. Even stepping down from their positions, the officials would still be punished if something problems happened to their evironment."
He adds that the concept puts emphasis on promoting behavior changes to help conserve natural treasures ranging from watersheds and forests to arable land.
During the second meeting of the United Nations Environmental Assembly, a report was launched highlighting the success of China's ecological civilization strategy. According to the report, China has set a precedent in restoration of vital ecosystems such as forests and pristine land.
Sheng hailed significant strides China has achieved in greening its economy thanks to rapid implementation of the targets outlined in the ecological civilization blueprint.
"China's forest coverage has increased from 16.66 percent in 2001 to 21.6 percent in 2013, and is expected to reach over 23 percent of total as the country implements the blueprint. And China's production of new energy vehicles increased 45-fold between 2011 and 2015."
Sheng emphasized the need for regular sharing of ideas and expertise between China and other countries to help hasten low-carbon development.
"China's ecological civilization has made contributions to accelerate sustainable development pathways for the international community. And it should be shared with other countries in the world."
