CRI听力:Clinton Claims Victory in Democratic Primary Contest, Turns Attention to Trump

2016-06-09来源:CRI

It was a triumphant moment for Clinton, who after fighting hard and losing to then-Senator Barack Obama in 2008, and facing an unexpectedly tough opponent for the nomination this time around, finally claimed her piece of history.

"I am so grateful to do you, it is wonderful to be back in Brooklyn here in this beautiful building. And it may be hard to see tonight but we are all standing under a glass ceiling right now. But don't worry, we're not smashing this one, thanks to you, we've reached a milestone, the first time in our nation's history, that a woman will be a major party's nominee for president of the United States."

She also took a serious step towards forging party unity, congratulating her opponent Bernie Sanders, saying that their tough slog for the nomination would, in the end, be a net positive.

Clinton also gave a preview of her line of attack in the upcoming general election fight with Republican opponent Donald Trump.

"We believe that co-operation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment and bridges are better than walls. It's a simple but powerful idea, we believe that we are stronger together and the stakes in this election are high and the choice is clear. Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander in chief. He's not just trying to build a wall between America and Mexico, he's trying to wall off Americans from each other. When he says let's make America great again, that is code for let's take America backwards."

Even as the Democratic race was ending, new turmoil broke out among the Republicans. GOP leaders recoiled at Trump's comments about a Hispanic judge, with one senator even pulling his endorsement.

Trump capped his difficult day with victories in California, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and Montana. But he was muted at his victory rally, saying he understands "the responsibility" of leading the Republican Party.

He also made a direct appeal to dejected Sanders supporters and other Democrats.

Sanders, for his part, says he he will 'continue the fight' in the last primary of the Democratic campaign next week in Washington, DC.
