CRI听力:Chinese team clinches 5 more medals on day 3 in Rio
It has been a big day for China's swimming team, which earned three medals on day three of the Games.
Sun Yang won the men's 200m freestyle gold medal in a time of 1:44.65, making up for his disappointment at taking silver in the same event four years ago.
The swimmer described the victory as the best of his career.
"I've been controlling myself during the award ceremony, during the flag rising. Indeed, this gold medal means more to me than the ones for the 400m or 1500m race. As I've won those kinds of races in many other games, including the Olympics and the world championships. The 200m freestyle gold medal is the one I hadn't got. The winning has finally compensated the four year-long regret for me."
Sun declined to comment on his row with rival Mack Horton, who has described the Chinese swimmer as a "drug cheat," saying he only focuses on his and his Chinese teammates' competitions.
The athlete served a three-month ban in 2014 after testing positive for an illegal substance, which he says he unknowingly took as part of treatment for a heart condition.
The swimmer is scheduled to join the 1500m freestyle competition on Saturday, when he will be the favorite to defend his 1500m Olympic crown.
Also with the swimming team, Xu Jiayu grabbed silver in the men's 100m backstroke, the first medal for a Chinese athlete in that event.
Another breakthrough was made by Chinese female swimmer Fu Yuanhui, who tied for the bronze medal in the women's 100m backstroke with Canada's Kylie Masse.
"I've been swimming with my life, trying so hard that my leg cramps! I was so fast. I broke Asia's record. I used up all my 'prehistoric powers' yesterday and felt a bit tired today."
The swimmer has become a new internet favorite after her post-semifinal interview went viral.
Her dramatic facial expressions along with her funny yet spontaneous responses gained the 20 year-old lots of fans, describing her as a walking emoji package.
Elsewhere, on the 10m men's synchronized platform, Lin Yue and Chen Aisen have secured China's second diving gold medal.
It was Lin Yue's second Olympic gold medal in the event after his victory at the 2008 Beijing Games alongside Huo Liang.
However, things went less smoothly for another traditional strong Chinese team.
China's gymnasts finished with a bronze medal in the men's team event that was won by Japan.
Russia came in second.
Chinese gold medal favorite weightlifter Chen Lijun has also suffered from an unexpected incident, as he was forced to quit the men's 62kg weightlifting competition due to calf cramps.
Chen, the world record holder for the total and jerk, suddenly suffered cramps in both his calfs about just 10 minutes before he began his first snatch attempt at 143kg.
The cramping did not stop and Chen was forced to quit after he failed to lift the barbell in his first and second attempts.
"The pre-game training went really well. I didn't expect any of this from happening. I don't know why it happened and it is actually the first time in my life. It feels like fate. What's regrettable is that the four year's hard training has now all gone to waste, but I will come back next Olympics."
Also on the third match day, the Chinese men's basketball team suffered its second loss, losing to France 88-60, while the women's volleyball team bounced back from an unexpected loss to the Netherlands with a win over Italy.
