CRI听力:Pakistanis patriotic, optimistic on Independence Day despite rising terrorism

2016-08-15来源:CRI

The day began with a 31-gun salute in the national capital Islamabad, as well as a 21-gun salute in the provincial capitals.

Special prayers have also been offered for the prosperity, integrity and solidarity of the country, as well as for the unity of all Muslims.

The events come amid continued concerns throughout the country about terrorism.

"I am very happy and celebrating the independence day. However, yes, I am also fearful for the future of our next generation, there are many terrorists in the country. So yes, we are scared."

According to a survey conducted by the South Asia Terrorism Portal, over 500 people have been killed in multiple terror attacks in Pakistan since the start of this year.

One of the most deadly took place just last week in the southern city of Quetta, which left over 70 people dead.

Those taking part in the Independence Day celebrations in Quetta suggest their resolve to fight extremism in Pakistan has only been bolstered.

"We stand by the Pakistan army; they will eliminate terrorism from our motherland."

"I am very sad about the terrorist attacks in Pakistan, but I want to tell the terrorists that they cannot dampen our spirits."

Local businesses are reporting that sales of Independence Day items this year have doubled.

The number of festive activities, including flag raisings, fireworks, music performances and the illumination of government buildings have also increased substantially.

In the lead-up to this year's celebrations, the Pakistani government plans to organize more events to create national enthusiasm, as well as infuse patriotism among Pakistanis ahead of next year's celebrations, which will mark the 70th anniversary of the creation of the nation-state of Pakistan.
