CRI听力:The Orphan of Zhao to embrace Asian Premiere in Beijing
The Lincoln Center Festival production of The Orphan of Zhao, a 13th century opera that is considered an essential part of the Chinese repertoire, is scheduled to have its premiere in Beijing in October.
That's according to Zou Shuang, a newly-appointed artistic director of Beijing Music Festival.
"Director Chen Shizheng re-composed the melodies for this festival. For overseas audiences, it's hoped this work will lead to an appreciation for a classic Chinese tale. Meanwhile, it's hoped domestic audiences will come to understand how traditional Chinese theatre can be adapted with modern and western interpretations."
Zou Shuang introduced The Orphan of Zhao as a highlight of this year's upcoming Beijing Music Festival that will host 21 performances of the classic across three weeks in October.
The annual festival has entered its 21st year. As in previous years, it will present opera performances, immersive theatre productions, symphonies, chamber concerts and also a number of non-profit events including children's concerts, master-classes, forums and opera workshops.
