CRI听力:Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court upholds Mnangagwa's win

2018-08-25来源:CRI

"Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is duly declared the winner of the presidential elections held on the 30th of July 2018," says Luke Malaba, Chief Justice of Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court.

Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court has upheld Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory in last month's elections.

In delivering the verdict, Luke Malaba says the opposition's petition has been rejected as it failed to prove allegations of fraud during the presidential vote.

"In the final analysis, the court finds that the applicant has failed to place before it clear, direct, sufficient and credible evidence that the irregularities that he alleges marred the election process materially existed. In other words, there was no proof of the happenings of these irregularities as a matter of fact," says Luke Malaba.

Mnangagwa was declared winner of the presidential election on August 3rd, garnering 50.8% of the vote, narrowly avoiding a run-off.

The opposition MDC-alliance petitioned the top court to challenge the results on August 10th, claiming the vote was marred by theft and fraud.

In the wake of this court ruling, Mnangagwa has called for peace and unity.

He's urging opposition leader Nelson Chamisa to put their differences behind and move forward together.

However, it doesn't appear Chamsia is willing to give up.

He's told his supporters on twitter that he know they feel cheated, saying he will listen to them on the course of action to be taken to rescue Zimbabwe from the jaws of poverty, corruption and dishonesty.

Hundreds of the ruling party's supporters gathered at ZANU-PF headquarters, bursting into song and dance as the ruling was announced.

Mnangagwa is expected to be sworn in within 48 hours.

He faces a daunting task of reviving the country's shattered economy and uniting a deeply divided nation.
