CRI听力:Scott Morrison re-elected Australian Prime Minister
Australia has wrapped its federal election on Saturday.
The ruling coalition led by Scott Morrison has unexpectedly won the election, despite what previous polling had suggested.
After counting votes for some six hours, the result of the 2019 Australia Federal Election becomes clear. The Coalition will continue to rule Australia.
The leader of Labor Party Bill Shorten first announces his defeat on Saturday night, as well as resignation as party leader.
"It is obvious that Labor will not be able to form the next government and so in the national interest, a short while ago, I called Scott Morrison to congratulate him and I wish Jenny and their daughters all the very best and, above all, I wished Scott Morrison good fortune and good courage in the service of our great nation."
Shortly after Shorten stepped down the stage in Melbourne, Scott Morrison speaks in Sydney calling this election a "miracle".
"I have always believed in miracles. How good is Australia? And how good are Australians? These are the quiet Australians who have won a great victory tonight."
Multiple previous polls indicated that the Opposition Labor party would beat the ruling Coalition in this election. However, the result is unexpected for both sides. Labor lost the majority of seats in the state of Queensland, which attribute to their loss in the general election.
Melbourne resident Lisa has been rooting for the Labor Party for many years and she is very disappointed at this result.
"I don't know. I don't know what Labor could do differently. To be honest, they were the ones to put forward policies. They were the ones who understand what the Australian people want. The campaign was perfect. And I think the policy reflected that. So I don't understand the result that is coming in."
Analysts are arguing that the policies put forward by Labor were too ambitious and costly such as massive cuts on carbon emissions. According to analysts, Scott Morrison cleverly targeted at these policies which made people in states like Queensland afraid of losing jobs and changes. Many are predicting Morrison to be a Liberal legend who won an "unwinnable" election.
Earlier in his campaign, Morrison promised income tax cuts, lower bills and lower down payment for first home buyers along with other policies.
