[00:02.12]This is a listening practice test that resembles the International English Language Testing System Listening Test.
[00:12.33]The test consists of four sections. Answer the questions are you listen to the recording.
[00:20.04]Note that the recording will be played once only. Please turn to Section 1.
[00:28.03]Section 1
[00:29.44]Annie is an overseas student who has just enrolled at the University of Lancaster.
[00:36.41]Her friend Clive meets her on enrolment day. Look at the Example and Questions 1 and 2.
[00:44.64]For each question, four pictures are given.
[00:48.69]Decide which picture best matches what you hear on the tape,
[00:54.10]and circle the letter indicating the correct location. First, you have some time to look more carefully at Questions 1 and 2.
[01:04.37]Now listen to the conversation between Annie and Clive, and answer Questions 1 and 2.
[01:14.06]Clive:Hi, Annie. I see you've just enrolled.
[01:16.72]Annie:Oh, hi, Clive. Yes, it didn't take long. How was it for you?
[01:21.74]Clive:Don't worry about me, because I've re-enrolled for another year,
[01:25.76]I don't have to be here until this afternoon, but I thought I'd come along and help.
[01:30.78]Annie:Oh, that's very kind of you, Clive. Maybe you could help me with this elective class timetable.
[01:37.31]It's for students who need more English practice, like me.
[01:41.15]Clive:Of course! Tell me about it.
[01:43.52]Annie:It's on Mondays, and I have to choose which timetable is best for me.
[01:48.64]There are six to choose from. Here, take a look.
[01:52.48]Clive:Oh, I see. Well, what do you need?
[01:56.17]Annie:I need everything...but especially conversation practice.
[02:00.74]Clive:Well, do you want to go to the Conversation class in the morning or afternoon?
[02:06.12]Annie:I think the morning would be best for me.
[02:08.81]Clive:Fine. So, Grammar and Conversation classes in the morning.
[02:13.15]Annie:Grammar? Oh, I can't stand studying grammar!
[02:17.04]Clive:Well, in that case, Writing and Conversation in the morning, followed by Pronunciation and Reading in the afternoon.
[02:25.03]Annie:I don't think my pronunciation is too bad, do you?
[02:29.16]Clive:No, pronunciation is one of your strongest points.
[02:33.39]Annie:Yes, but I do need to improve my vocabulary.
[02:37.18]Clive:If you attend the Vocabulary class in the afternoon, you should study Grammar in the morning.
[02:42.80]How is your listening ability?
[02:44.99]Annie:I always need more listening practice.
[02:48.18]Clive:Very well then, your best choice would be to attend the Grammar,
[02:52.20]Writing and Conversation classes in the morning, followed by the Reading and Listening classes in the afternoon.
[02:59.51]Annie:Do I have to take grammar?
[03:01.45]Clive:Well, yes, if you are serious about improving your writing.
[03:05.18]Annie:Yes, I suppose you are right. Which class is first in the morning?
[03:09.47]Clive:Grammar. How is your reading, Annie?
[03:12.39]Annie:Oh, I'm still a bit slow. Yes, I think I will study Grammar, Writing and Conversation in the morning...
[03:19.21]Clive:Followed by Reading and Listening in the afternoon.
[03:22.50]Good choice! Now is there anything else you need to do?
[03:26.29]Annie:Let's see... I have to give this from to the English department tomorrow.
[03:31.23]Clive:Do you have any classes today?
[03:33.21]Annie:There is a special introductory English class for foreign students later this morning.
[03:39.25]Clive:Oh, right...er...it's nine-thirty right now. What time is the class?
[03:44.37]Annie:We have to be at the auditorium at 11:00 am.
[03:48.00]Clive:Since we have time now, let's go to the Student Centre.
[03:52.07]Annie:O.K. let's go!
[03:54.27]Narrator:Clive and Annie continue their conversation at the Student Centre.
[04:00.43]Choose the most suitable answers given for each of the questions numbered 3 to 7.
[04:06.65]First, you have some time to look at the questions.
[04:10.83]Now listen to the conversation, and answer Questions 3 to 7.
[04:16.31]Annie:Clive, how many years have you been studying at the College?
[04:20.60]Clive:This is my second year. Tell me, what is it you're studying, again?
[04:25.56]Computer programming, isn't it?
[04:27.76]Annie:Yes, I worked as a computer programmer after I graduated from university in China.
[04:33.68]Clive:I suppose you are already very good at it.
[04:36.72]Annie:Well I have already worked for five years in the computer field.
[04:40.69]Clive:Right. Well then, here is the Student Centre.
[04:44.37]Annie:Wow, it's so huge!
[04:46.41]Clive:It should be, our campus enrolls 600 students and has 55 on the staff.
[04:52.34]Annie:Oh, look! There is some information about clubs.
[04:56.02]Clive:I'm already a member of the Chess and Stamp Collectors clubs. Do you want to collect stamps?
[05:02.45]Annie:No offense Clive, but that sounds dreadfully boring! What else is there?
[05:07.51]Clive:Astronomy, Bicycling, Hang-gliding, Sky Diving...
[05:11.85]Annie:Sky-diving! That sounds like great fun! How much is it to join?
[05:17.13]Clive:It says here, first-year students must pay 30 pounds.
[05:21.54]Do you want to become a member?
[05:23.42]Annie:Why not?
[05:24.62]Clive:My, you are brave!
[05:27.11]Narrator:At the Student Information Office, Annie wants to join the Sky Diving club.
[05:33.48]She has to give information about herself to the clerk. Listen to the conversation,
[05:39.75]and complete the information on the Club Registration form in the spaces numbered 8 to 14.
[05:47.66]First, you have some time to look at the form.
[05:51.50]Now listen to the conversation, and answer Question 8 to 14.
[05:57.07]Clive:Hello. My friend Annie is a new student and she would like to join the Sky Diving club.
[06:02.84]Clerk:Of course. All I have to do is fill in this registration for
[06:08.07]and the cost is only 30 pounds for first year students.
[06:12.09]To start with, I need your full name. It's Annie, isn't it?
[06:16.42]Annie:Actually no, Annie is my English name. My real name is spelled W-E-N-L-I.
[06:24.84]Clerk:Family name?
[06:26.12]Annie:Gao.
[06:27.27]Clerk:Gao...How do you spell that?
[06:29.51]Annie:G-A-O.
[06:31.50]Clerk:Gao, very good and where are you form...?
[06:34.79]Annie:...China.
[06:35.89]Clerk:Nationality:Chinese. I've been to China, well Hong Kong actually.
[06:40.82]OK, what's your student number?
[06:43.30]Annie:Here is it on my student card. The number is:666 - L C F.
[06:49.89]Clerk:666-L C F. Got it. You must be doing the Advanced Programming course.
[06:56.81]Tell me about your Sky Diving experience. How long have you been diving?
[07:01.75]Annie:I once had to jump out of a plane that was going to crash...
[07:05.98]Clive:You've got to be joking!
[07:08.17]Annie:No it's a true story!
[07:10.71]Clerk:So you have jumped once before. Now for the record we need to know your blood type.
[07:16.64]Annie:Oh, right. I'm A negative.
[07:19.67]Clerk:And we always dive with a partner. Will you be diving together?
[07:23.40]Clive:Me, jump out of a plane? I collect stamps for a hobby.
[07:28.08]Annie:Oh, come on Clive. Try it just once!
[07:31.16]Clive:Sure, I'll try it once...but if I get killed it will be your fault!
[07:36.12]Clerk:Your name sir?
[07:37.27]Clive:Clive, C-L-I-V-E.
[07:40.75]Clerk:Family name?
[07:41.74]Clive:Boddington, B-O-D-D-I-N-G-T-O-N.
[07:46.13]Clerk:Good. Now, when would you like to go sky diving?
[07:49.71]Annie:We have to do it on Saturday mornings. Is that all right with you Clive?
[07:53.99]Clive:Saturday is as good as any day to jump into one's grave.
[07:59.22]Annie:Oh stop being so mellowdramatic! It will be fun, you'll see.
[08:03.89]Clerk:Saturday morning is fine. Now, one more thing,
[08:07.78]I need a contact telephone number in case we need to right you...
[08:11.57]Weather conditions or something like that... What's your home phone number?
[08:16.09]Annie:555-2626.
[08:19.88]Clerk:555-2626. Now, all you have to do is pay 30 pounds, and I'll give you a club membership card.
[08:29.15]Here's some information about the Club.
[08:31.40]You are finished Ms Gao. Now you need to give me some information for your membership,
[08:37.17]Mr.Boddington.
[08:38.45]Annie:I'll see you later, Clive.
[08:40.28]Clive:I must have woken up daft this morning.
[08:43.57]Narrator:That is the end of Section 1. You now have 30 seconds to check your naswers to Section 1.
[08:52.92]Now turn to Section 2.
[08:55.95]Section 2. At the Student Centre, Annie watches an educational program on television.
[09:03.71]Fill in the gaps in the summary of the news item with the correct word or phrase, according to what you hear.
[09:12.07]Write your answers to Question 15 to 23 in the column on the right of the page.
[09:19.91]The first one has been done for you as an example. You now have some time to look at the summary.
[09:28.22]Now listen to the program about Britain's climate, and answer Questions 15 to 23.
[09:36.63]...Northern Ireland generally has a sparse and scattered population,
[09:40.81]and is a largely rural country with good agricultural land.
[09:45.25]The relative smallness of the country and the widespread influences of a warm sea and westerly winds mean that there are no extreme contrasts in temperature throughout Britain.
[09:56.19]The climate is mainly temperate, with variations between coolness and mildness.
[10:01.91]Altitude modifies temperatures, so that higher ground is colder than low-lying land.
[10:07.84]Much of Scotland and the upland areas of Wales and England are therefore cool in summer and cold in winter compared with most of England.
[10:16.57]The main factors affecting the amount of British rainfall are (1) the depressions,
[10:22.58]or low-pressure areas, which travel eastward across the Atlantic Ocean;
[10:27.20](2)the prevailing south-westerly winds throughout much of the yeaer;
[10:31.88](3)the exposure of the western coasts to the Atlantic Ocean; and (4) the fact that most of the highest ground lies in the wes
[10:42.53]As a result, the heaviest annual rainfall is in the west and north, over 1,600 mm,
[10:50.00]with an autumn or winter maximum. The high ground in the west protects the lowlands of the south and east,
[10:57.66]so that annual rainfall here is quite moderate at about 800 mm, with a slight summer maximum.
[11:05.29]The total national rainfall average is over 1,000 mm annually.
[11:11.56]March to June tend to be the driest months, while September to January are the wettest.
[11:18.14]Although drought conditions are infrequent, they do occur and can cause problems for farmers, the water companies and consumers.
[11:26.60]Low-pressure systems may produce very variable weather. They normally pass over the northern British Isles,
[11:33.47]and south-westerly winds have a strong influence for much of the year.
[11:38.36]The result can be windy, wet and unstable conditions.
[11:43.24]But high-pressure systems, which also happen throughout the year,
[11:47.58]are relatively stable and move more slowly, producing light winds and generally settled weather.
[11:54.71]This pattern can result in fine and dry effects, both in winter and summer.
[12:00.09]The amount of sunshine in Britain varies between regions.
[12:03.67]It decreases from south to north, inland from the coastal belts, and with altitude.
[12:10.49]In summer, the daily average sunshine varies from five hours in northern Scotland to eight hours on the Isle of Wight.
[12:19.06]In winter, sunlight averages one hour in northern Scotland and two hours on the English south coast.
[12:26.81]These average statistics indicate that Britain is not a particularly sunny country,
[12:32.93]although there are periods of relief from the general greyness.
[12:36.82]The frequent cloud-cover over the British Isles is a complicating factor,
[12:41.50]so that even on a hot summer's day there may be little sunshine breaking through the clouds.
[12:46.93]This can give humid, sticky conditions. The uNPRedictability of Britain's weather is virtually a national institution,
[12:56.10]a topic of daily conversation, and for some a conditioning factor in the national character.
[13:03.86]The British tend to think that they live in a more temperate climate than is actually the cas
[13:09.89]But many escape abroad in both winter and summer.
[13:13.97]That is the end of Section 2. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to Section 2.
[13:23.08]Now turn to Section 3.
[13:26.32]Section 3
[13:27.81]Later that morning, Annie attends a special class for students who are non-native speakers.
[13:34.29]The tutor is interviewing an ex-student of the College. For Questions 24 to 32,
[13:42.47]listen to the interview, and complete each sentence with a suitable word or phrase.
[13:48.94]First, you have some time to look at the Example and questions.
[13:54.72]Now listen to the interview, and answer Questions 24 to 3
[14:01.48]Tutor:Today I have with me Raul Sanchez, who was a student at this college, er... how long ago?
[14:09.61]Raul:I was here one and a half...no, two years ago now.
[14:13.79]Tutor:Raul was a student in this English class when he was at this college,
[14:17.81]and he is here to tell us about the many problem facing a non-native speaker in a British tertiary institution.
[14:25.07]What have you been doing since you graduated, Raul?
[14:28.15]Raul:I was quite lucky when I left the college, because I got a job pretty quickly with the London Dental Council.
[14:34.87]I'm still with them.
[14:36.56]Tutor:Tell the class what course you took here at the college?
[14:39.60]Raul:Yes, I originally wanted to work in advertising,
[14:43.12]but I found it was too hard because of my English.
[14:46.47]And so I changed my direction, and, well, I'm glad I did,
[14:51.04]because I've now got an Associate Diploma in Dental Hygiene,
[14:55.74]and that's how I managed to get a job with the council.
[14:58.93]Tutor:What exactly do you do with the council?
[15:01.12]Raul:I work with a dentist, making sure that the patients are taken care of and all the necessary tools have been cleaned and prepared for use.
[15:09.64]Sometimes I must assist the dentist in complicated procedures. It's a demanding job, but I like it.
[15:16.85]Tutor:You perform dental surgery?
[15:18.99]Raul:Not quite, but I do use tools to make the patients feel more comfortable during the operation.
[15:24.76]A lot of my time is spent in general checkups, cleaning teeth and demonstrating good dental practices.
[15:31.84]I also develop x-rays.
[15:34.03]Tutor:What exactly were the problems when you first arrived at the college?
[15:37.51]Raul:I was very shy, you know. I couldn't communicate with the students in my class because most of them were British...
[15:44.22]my English was not very good. But I, I thought everything was O.K.,
[15:49.92]until I received the result of my first examination.
[15:53.99]The tutor was worried why I was so quiet in class.
[15:57.73]I told her it was because I was afraid to ask a question.
[16:01.85]So she suggested that I talk to the school counselor.
[16:05.28]Tutor:What advice did the counselor give?
[16:07.52]Raul:Well, she was very kind and understanding, and I realized that I was doing the wrong course.
[16:13.84]You have to be an 'extrovert'..., you know, outgoing. I think it's a personal thing with me.
[16:19.72]You had to give a lot of opinions, and I am shy. So, she suggested I ask more questions in class,
[16:28.40]so I made it a rule to ask at least one or two questions every lesson.
[16:32.81]Tutor:So you swapped courses and began to talk more in class. Was there anything else that the counselor suggested?
[16:39.52]Raul:Yes, she said I shouldn't live with students from my own country.
[16:44.41]She suggested I should share a house with some British students.
[16:48.59]So I did, and my English improved much faster.
[16:52.22]Tutor:Are there any problems you currently have with English?
[16:55.35]Raul:Of course, I used to have a lot of trouble with the technical vocabulary in my field,
[17:00.97]but I picked it up very quickly. Now, it's mostly... I have difficulty trying to understand the colloquial language of Britain;
[17:10.32]the way people express themselves here is sometimes strange to me.
[17:15.15]Tutor:I see. How do you increase your vocabulary? Please give us some examples.
[17:21.87]Raul:Well, I really like to watch movies.
[17:25.21]I recommend that you watch movies you have already seen subtitled in your native language,
[17:31.25]but this time only listen to the English, don't read the subtitles!
[17:36.37]Also, it can be quite helpful to keep a journal of new expressions you hear so you can ask your English friends about them.
[17:43.58]Tutor:Let's talk more about your course at the college.
[17:47.91]Do you remember any study projects you were involved in?
[17:51.70]Raul:Well once we did a survey on the effects of different breakfast cereal on children's teeth.
[17:58.13]The ages ranged from 5-12 years old and we interviewed over 100 different kids from each age group,
[18:05.49]it was quite a big project! We discovered that many cereals that were advertised as being healthy were just as bad for teeth as the well known sugar-coated brands.
[18:16.12]Tutor:Why was that?
[18:17.22]Raul:It's complicated, but one of the main reasons was that many of these so-called "healthy" brands use just as much sugar as non-healthy breakfast cereals.
[18:27.70]However, there are a few brands, such as "Cheerios" that contain many nutrients that help teeth grow and do not cause decay that leads to cavities and other bad dental hygiene.
[18:40.16]The problem is that many children become addicted to sweet, sugary cereal very young,
[18:46.27]and do not want to change. Some children even add more sugar to very healthy cereal such as corn flakes,
[18:54.03]which completely destroys the benefits of the cereal for children's teeth.
[18:58.36]Tutor:Um, one last question. What about your future? Do you have any immediate plans?
[19:04.63]Raul:Well in the short-term I'll continue to work as a dental assistant and gain more experience.
[19:10.96]After two years, I plan to attend dental school to become a dentist.
[19:15.84]My long-term goal is to open my own dental practice here in Britain,
[19:20.18]or maybe return to my own country and open a practice there.
[19:24.62]Tutor:I see. Now, does anyone have a question for Raul? Yes. In the first row...
[19:31.15]Narrator:That is the end of Section 3. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to Section 3.
[19:40.00]Now turn to Section 4.
[19:43.35]Section 4
[19:44.84]You will hear part of the orientation in which Annie is shown the College's Physical Education facility.
[19:52.46]For each of the questions numbered 33 to 40, circle the letter A if the statement is accurate,
[20:00.59]I if the statement is inaccurate, or N if the information in the statement is not given in the listening passage.
[20:08.89]First, you have some time to look at the Example and questions.
[20:13.91]Now listen to the orientation, and answer Questions 33 to 40.
[20:20.68]Ray:I'm pleased to introduce to you Dave Davies, who is in charge of maintaining the facilities of our physical education compound.
[20:28.43]Over you to , Dave.
[20:29.98]Dave:Yes, well thanks for that smashing introduction, Ray.
[20:33.50]Yes, ladies and gentlemen, as you can see, this is the main indoor gym.
[20:38.62]Here you can play basketball, volleyball and badminton.
[20:41.86]Through those doors in the back you will find the weight room and exercise machines.
[20:47.09]Outside the door on the left, you will find the outdoor football field, and tennis and table tennis courts.
[20:54.35]And finally, the right door is the entrance to our indoor swimming pool.
[20:59.83]Of course, maintenance is one of our primary concerns, so I will go over some of the rules of the main gym so that everyone can enjoy good fitness.
[21:10.05]All students are expected to follow the rules.
[21:12.79]Anyone found neglecting to follow the rules will be disallowed further use of the gym.
[21:18.56]First of all you may only use the gym when the school's athletic teams are not having practice sessions.
[21:25.33]Not to worry though, there are 40 hours of possible free time to use each section of the compound in one week.
[21:32.64]If you want to know when these times are, I suggest you refer to the schedule of available free time posted at the main entrance.
[21:41.16]The second step is that you must sign in at the equipment locker to use the courts or any accessories needed.
[21:48.32]Do not just casually walk in and use the courts. During busy periods,
[21:54.30]students may have to wait until a court is free.
[21:57.59]This means that you may be cutting in front of someone who has been waiting for some time.
[22:02.87]If you are caught, you can lose your gym privileges.
[22:06.94]The third rule has to do with equipment borrowed from the gym.
[22:11.67]Any damaged equipment should be reported immediately to the equipment room. This is very important,
[22:18.93]because of liability in accident cases. Faulty exercise machines or dangerous court conditions can cause accidents.
[22:28.44]If you are reckless and damage any of the compound's equipment you will be expected to pay for it.
[22:34.97]This is not true in cases of normal wear and tear, for example,
[22:39.36]a punctured basketball or a non-operating electrical unit on an exercise machine.
[22:45.13]The fourth rule involves the use of the indoor swimming facility.
[22:49.65]Before you may use the pool, you must pass a basic swimming test.
[22:54.72]This is just a precaution to keep non-experienced swimmers from getting into trouble.
[23:00.28]If you do not pass the swimming test, you have the chance to take a two-week free swimming course until your ability improves.
[23:08.80]By the way, if any of you have any diving experience please let me know at the end of the lecture,
[23:14.96]This is the first year we will be having a diving team on campus.
[23:19.48]Well, I think I have gone over everything. If no one has any question
[23:25.10]let me end by saying good luck to all of you, and I hope you find your fitness needs adequately met by our staff and facilities.
[23:34.24]Back to you, Ray.
[23:35.89]Ray:Yes, thanks, Dave. Now, if you will all follow me, we will be visiting the university's main computer lab next.
[23:43.86]Narrator:That is the end of Section 4. You now have 30 second to check your answers to Section 4.
[23:52.71]You now have one minute to check your answers for the entire test.
