Although it's named after the early-20th-century French fashion designer Jean Patou, the Hotel Patou is more like a bed and breakfast than a full-service boutique hotel that can handle the demanding whims of a fashion icon. Still, its namesake might have appreciated the hotel's chic and glossy rooms - all 12 of them feature original photographs of models draped in his sartorial creations - as well as its being on Amsterdam's most exclusive fashion and art row.

THE LOCATION One would be hard pressed to find a tonier block in Amsterdam. But while P.C. Hooftstraat is the Amsterdam equivalent of Fifth Avenue (Louis Vuitton and Chanel are across the street), it's far more intimate. P.C. Hooftstraat is rarely crowded or noisy. Plus, the Museumplein, home to the Rijks and Van Gogh museums, is just two short blocks away.

THE ROOM It may have been small, but my room, No.24, had big style.

Blond wood floors, crisp cream-colored walls and warm soffit lighting set the stage for an enormous black platform bed, made of polished wood, that seemed to float in the center of the room. There was just enough detail to give the modern, vaguely Art Deco room personality without making it cluttered: a shiny black vase with a fresh arrangement of greenery; a striped, feather-soft throw blanket and a photograph of a pale, thin model reclining in a snugly fitted Patou dress.

THE BATHROOM Small but luxurious, as if it had been cut from an enormous block of light gray marble. A large unenclosed shower was tucked behind a long, trough-like sink accessorized with Zen Zone toiletries.

AMENITIES The Brasserie Patou, an elegant Art Deco-style cafe next to the hotel, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Otherwise, the hotel offers few common spaces. Service was virtually nonexistent at night. The sleepy receptionist took such a long time bringing our luggage upstairs that my husband ended up doing it himself. Things improved the following morning when a cheery hotel manager was stationed behind the desk and offered help with lunch reservations. Although the Web site promised free Wi-Fi, it hadn't been set up yet.

ROOM SERVICE None. Guests must head down to the brasserie for a bite. Its menu caters to the kind of diners who wear Gucci and Chanel: heavy on truffles, oysters and Champagne. Breakfast, which is included in the rate, is a small buffet in the cafe that includes a coffee or tea, yogurt, croissants, boiled eggs and cheeses.

BOTTOM LINE The Hotel Patou is for the fashionable traveler on a tighter budget - and with fewer demands - than some others. Rooms range from
