From the cnn center in Atlanta, I'm Nicole Lapin. Thanks so much for checking in with us today. Here's a look at what's happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.

The leader who introduced democracy and free-market reforms to Russia has died. Boris Yeltsin was Russia's first democratically elected president and basically engineered the final collapse of the Soviet Union. The Kremlin announced his funeral would be held on Wednesday, the 25th. That day will also be a national day of mourning. The Interfax News Agency says he died of heart failure in a Moscow hospital. Boris Yeltsin was 76 years old.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered a halt to a construction of security barriers in a Baghdad neighborhood. But a spokesman later said that the Prime Minister was responding to groundless media reports that the walls would be permanent. Iraqi and US officials say they will continue to set up these temporary barriers in order to stem sectarian violence plaguing the country.

Nigeria's Electoral Commission has declared the ruling party's candidate the winner of this weekend's presidential election. It says that Muslim governor Umaru Yar'Adua won by a landslide. European Union observers say Nigeria's election on Sunday, though, fell short of international standards. A top opposition politician wants the vote annulled and called on parliament to impeach the president.

Virginia Tech's students and faculty paused for a moment of silence before classes resumed on campus. It was one-week ago that a student turned a gunman, opened fire and killed 32 people before killing himself. College officials say they are simply not sure how many students will forgo the last weeks of class to stay home with their families instead.

And if you fueled up lately, you have paid big. A national survey says the gas rose more than 8 cents a gallon just in the last two weeks and nearly 70 cents so far this year. The Lundberg Survey says self-serve regular now averages $2.87 a gallon. The cheapest is in Minneapolis at 2.65, while folks in San Francisco are shelling out $3.37.
