Hello, I’m Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at some of the stories happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Wednesday.
Authorities executed a new search warrant at Drew Peterson's home. He is the former suburban Chicago police sergeant suspected in his 23-year-old wife Stacy’s disappearance. The State Attorney's Office says the warrant dealt with items inside two vehicles already seized from Peterson’s home.The search for Stacy Peterson is foucused on the Illinois Michigan canal in Lockport. Now in spite of this wintry weather, crews have three boats out on the canal and divers are searching the water.
There's a bit of good news report from the Pacific Northwest. Power is being restored to hundreds of homes and businesses, now recovering from two days of severe storms. But flooding and mudslides continue to be a problem for many communities in Washington and Oregon. Rain's fall and river's increase have washed out roads and that's hampered many of the efforts to rescue people still trapped in flooded community.
The US Supreme Court is taking a look at the rights of prisoners being held at the Pentagon's detention camp in Guantanamo Bay Cuba.They're considering whether foreign detainees have a right to appeal to US federal judges.
About two hundred people had been moved to safety early this morning because of a tanker truck explosion and fire outside the Boston. Police say a tanker truck overturned bursting into flames at about 1:30. At least two buildings and about 40 cars went up in flames. Amazingly the driver was not hurt. Police have cited him for speeding.
Police have now arrested a British man who went missing in 2002 after what appeared to be a boating accident. John Darwin turned up alive in London saying he remembers nothing since two years before his disappearance. He has been detained on suspicion of fraud.
