Good morning, I’m Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta. It’s a Tuesday morning, July 28th. Here is a look at some of the stories happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Today President Obama's holding a town hall meeting with AARP members to answer questions about his push to overhaul the health care system. Two more town halls around the health-care issue are slated for tomorrow. A Senate vote on health-care changes has been postponed now until at least September.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote this hour on Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nominations to the Supreme Court. It was delayed a week, so Republican members could further examine her record. The Committee is expected to approve her nomination which will then go to the full Senate for a vote.(www.hXen.com)
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Iraq. He is at the southern command post where US Forces mainly serve as advisers to Iraqi troops. The base is a prototype as Pentagon's role in Iraq shifting to one of the support. Secretary Gates will also be meeting with political leaders including Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri Kamel al-Maliki .
The shuttle(s) Endeavour crew is saying farewell to the International Space Station. Endeavour is scheduled to separate from the station this afternoon. Yesterday, astronauts breezed through their fifth and their final space walk. Astronauts did some rewiring and hooked up TV cameras outside the station. Endeavour is expected to return home on Friday.
And even though no team has expressed interest in him yet, Michael Vick could be back in uniform and playing for the NFL this season. Foo(播音员口误)… Football commissioner Roger Goodell is allowing Vick to sign with a team to practice and to play in the last two preseason games. Vick will be considered for full reinstatement by week six of the NFL season which is in October.
