[00:00.00]Lesson 8   On being crazy (AFter W.E.B. Du Bois)
[00:29.20]  It was one o'clock and I was hungry.
[00:33.36]I found a place,seated myself,and reached for the menu.
[00:39.21]The man sitting at the other side of the table rose.
[00:43.76]  "Sir,"said he,"do you wish to force me to share the same table with you?"
[00:50.70]  "No," said I ,"I wish to eat."
[00:54.94]  "Do you understand, sir, that this is social equality?"
[01:00.68]  "Nothing of the sort, sir,I'm hungry--and I want to eat."
[01:06.64]  The day's work was over. I sought the theater .
[01:11.78]As I sank into my seat and leaned back,
[01:16.02]the woman beside me seemed frightened and jumped up from her chair.
[01:21.45]  "Do you enjoy sitting beside me?"she asked coldly.
[01:26.60]  "Oh,no," I said.
[01:29.76]  "Well, you are not wanted here."
[01:33.73]  I was surprised."I fear you are mistaken,"I said,
[01:39.89]"I certainly like the music. And I want to listen to it."
[01:45.25]"Is social equality permitted her?boy,"shouted the lady to a man showing people to their seats,
[01:53.11]"this is social equality."
[01:56.64]  "No,madam,"said the boy,"it is Beethoven's music."
[02:02.67]  After the theater,I sought the hotel.
[02:07.03]I had sent my cases there. The man there asked:
[02:12.60]  "What do you want?"
[02:15.55]  "Rest," I said.
[02:18.79]  "This is a white hotel,"he said.
[02:22.94]  I looked around.
[02:25.89]"It isn't white,such a color needs a great deal of cleaning." I said.
[02:31.95]"But I don't think I mind."
[02:35.40]  "We mind," said he.   "Then why?"
[02:40.65]  "We don't keep niggers," he said,"We don't want social equality."
[02:47.03]  "Neither do I," I replied gently. I want a bed."
[02:52.96]  I walked to the train. "I'll  take a sleeper through Texas.
[02:59.30]I'm a little bit dissatisfied with this town."
[03:03.85]  "We won't sell you one."
[03:07.19]  "I only want to hire it,"said I," for a couple of nights."
[03:12.65]  "Can't sell you a sleeper in Texas,"he insisted.
[03:17.51]"They consider it social equality."
[03:21.67]  "I consider it crazy," I said," I think I'll walk."
[03:27.41]  While walking I met another traveller.
[03:31.46]When he saw me he walked at once to the other side of the road.
[03:37.03]It was muddy.I asked his reason.
[03:41.99]  "Niggers are dirty," he said.
[03:45.62]  "So is mud," sai I ." And I am not as dirty as you, yet."
[03:51.97]  "But you're a nigger,aren't you?"
[03:55.44]  "My grandfather was so called." I admitted.
[03:59.99]  "Well then," he said proudly.
[04:03.75]  "Do you live in the South?"
[04:07.12]  "Sure,"he answered,"and suffer there."
[04:11.48]"I should think you and the negroes should get together and take some action to put an end to it."
[04:18.32]  "We don't let them do that."
[04:21.80]  "We?Why not?" I said in surprise.
[04:26.24]  "Niggers know nothing about it."
[04:30.00]  "But," I said,"I don't think I know less than you do."
[04:35.75]  "But you're a nigger."
[04:38.62]  I gave up,"Go on." I said,"either you are crazy or I am."
[04:46.07]  "We both are,"he said as he walked along in the mud.
