[00:00.00]Unit Seven Text
[00:24.58]In this article the author describes what happened to her one night
[00:30.62] and her feelings about it.
[00:34.14]THERE'S ONLY LUCK Ruth Reichl
[00:39.42]My mind went numb when I saw the gun pointing against the car window
[00:45.66]as we pulled out of the garage: This can't be happening to me.
[00:52.01]Then I felt the gun, cold, against my head, and I heard my friend Jeremy saying,
[00:59.38]"What do you want? Take my wallet,"
[01:03.35]but at the time I thought of nothing.
[01:07.29]I remember being vaguely annoyed
[01:11.55]when the gunman pulled me from the car by the hair.
[01:16.30]I remember the walk to the house--Jeremy, me,the two men with two guns.
[01:23.67]I remember the fear and anger in the gunmen's voices
[01:29.00]because Jeremy was being slow, and remember wondering why he was being slow.
[01:36.16]I did not realize that Jeremy had thrown the keys into the shrubbery.
[01:42.43]But I remember the sound of the gun hitting Jeremy's head
[01:47.57]and the feeling as the man who had hold of my hair released me.
[01:53.63]And I remember the split second when I realized he was looking at Jeremy,
[02:00.29]and I remember wondering how far I could run before he pulled the trigger.
[02:06.56]But I was already running, and upon reaching the car across the street,
[02:13.02]I didn't crouch behind it but screamed instead.
[02:18.37]I remember thinking there was something absurdly melodramatic about screaming
[02:25.03]"Help, help!" at eight o'clock on a Tuesday evening in December
[02:31.51]and changing my plea to the more specific "Help, let me in,please let me in!"
[02:38.96]But the houses were cold,closed,unfriendly,
[02:44.83]and I ran on until I heard Jeremy's screams
[02:49.87]behind me announcing that our attackers had fled.
[02:54.92]The neighbors who had not opened their doors to us came out with baseball bats
[03:01.58]and helped Jeremy find his glasses and keys.
[03:06.44]In a group they were very brave.
[03:10.51]We waited for the cops to come until someone said to someone else
[03:17.04]that the noodles were getting cold, and I said politely,
[03:22.29]"Please go and eat. We're O.K."I was happy to see them go.
[03:29.27] They had been talking of stiffer sentences for criminals,
[03:35.33]of bringing back the death penalty
[03:39.09]and how the President is going to clean up the country.
[03:43.84]I was thinking, they could be saying all of this over my dead body,
[03:50.50]and I still feel that stiffer sentences wouldn't change a thing.
[03:56.46]In a rush all the rage I should have felt for my attackers
[04:02.34] was directed against these contented people standing in front of their warm,
[04:09.47]cozy homes talking about all the guns they were going to buy.
[04:15.63]What good would guns have been to Jeremy and me?
[04:20.60] People all over the neighborhood had called to report our screams,
[04:26.55]and the police turned out in force twenty minutes later.
[04:31.60]They were ill-tempered about what was,to them, much ado about nothing.
[04:38.07]After all,Jeremy was hardly hurt,
[04:42.51]and we were hopeless when it came to identification.
[04:47.37]"Typical," said one cop when we couldn't even agree on how tall the men were.
[04:53.85]Both of us were able to describe the guns in horrifying detail,
[05:00.09]but the two policemen who stayed to make the report
[05:04.85]didn't think that would be much help.
[05:08.82]The cops were matter-of-fact about the whole thing.
[05:13.68]The thin one said,"That was a stupid thing to do,throwing away the keys.
[05:20.44]When a man has a gun against your head you do what you're told."
[05:26.32]Jeremy looked properly sheepish.
[05:30.48]Then the fat cop came up
[05:34.13]and the thin one went to look around the outside of the house.
[05:39.38]"That was the best thing you could have done, throwing away the keys," he said.
[05:45.44]"If you had gone into the house with them ..."His voice trailed off.
[05:51.97]"They would have hurt her"he jerked his head toward me "and killed you both."
