[01:20.95]We use both words and body language to express our thoughts
[01:27.12]and opinions and to communicate with other people.
[01:32.47]We can learn a lot about what a person is thinking
[01:37.20]by watching his or her body language.
[01:41.64]Words are important,but the way a person stands,folds his or her arms,
[01:49.90]or moves his or her hands can also give us information about his or her feelings.
[01:57.45]Just like spoken language,body language varies from culture to culture.
[02:04.00]Making eye contact-looking directly into someone's eyes--
[02:09.85]is in some countries a way to show interest.
[02:15.11]In other countries,however,eye contact is rude or disrespectful.
[02:21.95]The gesture for OK,making a circle with one's thumb and index finger,
[02:29.32]has different meanings in different cultures.
[02:33.47]In Japan,someone who sees another person making the gesture
[02:39.53]will think it means money.
[02:42.77]In France,a person seeing the same gesture will think it means zero.
[02:49.25]In Brazil and Germany,however,the gesture is rude.
[02:54.81]The thumbs-up gesture,meaning"great"or"good job"in the US,is rude in Nigeria,
[03:03.28]but in Germany and Japan it means the number one.
[03:08.84]The"crazy"gesture,moving the index finger in a circle in front of the ear,
[03:16.10]means"you have a phone call"in Brazil.
[03:20.36]Even the gestures we use for"yes"and"no"are different around the world.
[03:27.02]In many countries,shaking one's head means"no",and nodding means"yes".
[03:34.47]In Bulgaria,parts of Greece,and lran,however,
[03:40.03]the gestures have the opposite meaning.
[03:44.47]There are also differences as to how often we touch each other,
[03:50.53]how close we stand to someone we are talking to,
[03:55.39]and how we act when we meet or part.
[04:00.14]In some countries,for example France and Russia,
[04:05.29]a visiting friend is agreeted with a kiss on the cheek;
[04:10.57]in other countries people greet eacg other with a firm handshake,a loving hug,
[04:17.65]a how or simply a nod of the head.
[04:22.09]While there are many different interpretations of our body language,
[04:27.44]some gestures seem to be universal.
[04:31.70]Pressing one's palms together and resting one's head on the back
[04:38.36]of one's hand while closing the eyes as if sleeping means "I am tired."
[04:45.02]A good way of saying"I am full"
[04:49.07]is moving the hand in circles over the stomach after a meal.
[04:54.64]If a person pats his or her stomach before a meal,it usually means"I am hungry."
[05:02.08]Perhaps the best example of universally understood body language is the smile.
[05:08.74]A smile can help us get through difficult situations
[05:13.91]and find friends in a world of strangers.
[05:18.35]A smile can open doors and tear down walls.
[05:23.40]It can be used to express almost any emotion.
[05:28.07]We can use a smile to apologise,to greet someone,
[05:33.35]to ask for help or to start a conversation.
[05:38.21]We can smile at ourselves in the mirror
[05:43.46]to make ourselves feel happier and stronger.
[05:46.62]And if we are feeling down or lonely,
[05:50.56]there is nothing better than to see the smiling face of a good friend.
