[05:53.70]than the combined efforts of men and machines.
[05:58.40]For example,no machine yet invented can hear or scent an intruder at some distance,

[06:12.40]and hold him safely until help arrives.
[06:16.50]A dog can do all that and much more when properly trained.
[06:22.80]Only a few breeds are suitable for police work.
[06:27.79]They must be strong to undertake the demanding physical work;
[06:33.59]they must be big and imposing so as to command respect;
[06:38.68]they must be intelligent in order to absorb all the specialized training.
[06:44.38]As they are expected to work in all weathers and under all kinds of conditions,
[06:51.59]they must have a coat that is suitable.

[06:59.84]that it offers little protection from the cold or from rough terrain,
[07:05.33]nor so long and shaggy that the dog becomes too hot,
[07:10.24]or hair so long that it becomes caught up when the animal is working.
