[10:04.25]Section B  CONVERSATION
[10:08.41]In this section you will hear everything ONCE ONLY.
[10:12.25]Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
[10:16.30]Questions 1 to 5 are based on a conversation.
[10:19.90]At the end of the conversation,
[10:22.31]you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following 5 questions.
[10:26.80]Now listen to the conversation.
[10:29.62]Jane (W): Good morning, professor Green.
[10:32.00]professor Green(M): Good morning.
[10:33.17]W: What are we going to talk about today?
[10:35.85]M: Today we will be going over the ten-week long course syllabus
[10:40.78]and setting up some general guidelines for this quarter,
[10:44.72]as well as answering any questions
[10:46.70]you may have about the reading and writing assignments…
[10:48.88]OK, now, in week one,
[10:52.26]we will cover chapters one to ten in the textbook
[10:55.20]and relate them to the novel by Julia Stephen “Walking the Dragons”.
[10:59.57]The primary focus will be on the living conditions of peasants during the 1930s.
[11:05.05]W: Does that mean we have to read all ten chapters and the novel by Monday?
[11:11.06]M: Good question, Jane. I’m glad you asked.
[11:14.14]The reading that you should have completed by Monday
[11:16.98]is Chapters one to six and the first half of Stephen’s novel.
[11:20.90]By Wednesday you should read through to chapter ten and finish the novel,
[11:25.19]and on Friday we will have our first writing assignment due.
[11:28.59]It is a brief response to Stephen’ s novel.
[11:31.35]W: How about the length requirement?
[11:33.52]M:  Seeing that this is a rather informal response paper,
[11:37.78]the length requirement is only one to two pages.
[11:40.42]W: Would you like us to use quotes from the novel?
[11:43.49]M:  For this paper, since it is so short
[11:46.66]I would prefer if you only used your own words…
[11:49.05]Now, if there are no further questions I will continue.
[11:53.21]In week two we will cover Chapters eleven to twenty
[11:56.53]as well as “The Blind Calligrapher” by Jonathan Wu.
[11:59.67]In week three we will cover chapters twenty-one to thirty
[12:03.60]and your second writing assignment will be due.
[12:06.35]This paper should be five to seven pages in length,
[12:08.96]and it should focus on the change in the lifestyle of peasants as compared to
[12:13.25]the change in lifestyle of the urban city-dwellers from 1930 to 1940.
[12:17.84]You should use quotations from at least two authors
[12:21.55]who give contrasting opinions about this time period.
[12:24.27]Are there any questions?
[12:26.25]W: Shall we need a bibliography for this paper?
[12:29.96]M:  Absolutely. If you quote an author,
[12:32.49]there must be a Bibliography to make clear exactly
[12:34.95]where you found that author’s words.
[12:37.04]W: what style should we follow when documenting these sources?
[12:41.30]M:  The MLA style is preferred. That is, in the body of your essay,
[12:46.55]after a citation of a source,
[12:48.48]you need to enclose in parentheses the author’s last name
[12:51.89]and the page number on which the information is found.
[12:54.80]W: I see.
[12:56.66]M:  If there are no more questions I’ll continue.
[12:59.34]OK. In week four there is no novel, only chapters thirty-one through forty.
[13:04.42]On Friday of week five we will have an in-class midterm
[13:07.92]covering chapters one to fifty and the two novels.
[13:11.20]W: That seems like quite a lot of material.
[13:13.94]Will we have any review sessions?
[13:16.56]M:  Yes, absolutely.
[13:18.86]Your teaching assistant will be leading discussion groups twice a week
[13:22.41]outside of class to help you grasp the information more clearly.
[13:26.12]I strongly urge you to attend as many of these sections as possible…
[13:30.48]Moving on, in week six, we will have no classes Monday and Wednesday,
[13:35.40]so we will watch a film about the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
[13:39.63]In week seven, we will cover chapters fifty-one through sixty
[13:44.26]and your third writing assignment will be due.
[13:46.87]In week eight, we will cover chapters sixty-one through seventy,
[13:51.13]as well as a selection of short essays.
[13:53.33]Week nine will be review and your final papers will be due in week ten
[13:58.03]along with the final examination.
[14:00.12]W: Is it all right if we turn in handwritten papers?
[14:03.93]M:  If you are unable to use a computer,
[14:06.82]then it is OK as long as you use blue or black ink
[14:10.97]and turn in a legible paper,
[14:12.62]however I would prefer it if all papers were printed out from a computer.
[14:17.87]W: Would it be all right
[14:19.82]if we worked with a partner for any of the papers?
[14:22.76]M: I want all your papers to be original works
[14:26.06]so I’ll have to say no to that request.
[14:29.44]W: We will do.
[14:30.87]M: Are there any further questions?
[14:33.40]No? If there are no further questions then you can go now.
[14:37.78]W: Thank you, Professor Green. Bye.
[14:39.47]M: Bye.
