[00:-1.00]Albert did not fit the description of any secret agent Charles had ever read about.
[00:-2.00]Following him down the corridor of the gloomy French hotel where Albert had a room,
[00:-3.00]Charles felt disappointed,
[00:-4.00]It was a small room,
[00:-5.00]on the sixth and top floor,
[00:-6.00]and scarcely a setting for a romantic figure.
[00:-7.00]2  Albert was, for one thing, fat. Very fat.
[00:-8.00]And then there was his accent.
[00:-9.00]Though he spoke French and German fairly well,
[00:10.00]he had never altogether lost the American accent
[00:11.00]he had brought Paris twenty years ago.
[00:12.00]3  "You are disappointed,"
[00:13.00]Albert said over his shoulder.
[00:14.00]"You were told that I was a secret agent,
[00:15.00]a spy, dealing in secrets and danger.
[00:16.00]You wished to meet me because you are a writer,
[00:17.00]young and romantic.
[00:18.00]You imagined mysterious figures in the night,
[00:19.00]the crack of guns,
[00:20.00]clever disguises, secret exploits."
[00:21.00]4  "Instead,
[00:22.00]you have spent an exceedingly dull evening at the opera with a fat man who,
[00:23.00]instead of having messages slipped into his hand by dark-eyed beauties,
[00:24.00]gets only an ordinary telephone call making an appointment in his room.
[00:25.00]You have been bored!"
[00:26.00]The fat man laughed to himself as he unlocked the door of his room
[00:27.00]and stood aside to let his frustrated guest enter.
[00:28.00]5  "Take cheer, my young friend,"
[00:29.00]Albert told him.
[00:30.00]"Presently you will see a paper of singular importance
[00:31.00]for which several men and women have risked their lives.
[00:27.00]Some day soon that paper may well affect the course of history.
[00:21.46]In that thought is drama, is there not?"
[00:22.46]As he spoke,
[00:23.46]Albert closed the door behind him.
[00:24.46]then he switched on the light.
[00:25.46]6  And as the light came on,
[00:26.46]Charles had his first thrill of the day.
[00:27.46]For across the room,
[00:28.46]a small gun in his hand, stood a man.
[00:29.46]7  "Max, " he said,
[00:30.46]"you gave me quite a start.
[00:31.46]I thought you were in Berlin.
[00:32.46]What are you doing in my room?"
[00:33.46]8  Max was slender. not tall,
[00:34.46]and with a face that suggested the look of a box.
[00:35.46]Except for the gun,
[00:36.46]he did not look very dangerous.
[00:37.46]9  "The report," he said.
[00:38.46]"The report that is being brought to you tonight concerning some new missiles.
[00:39.46]I thought I would take it from you.
[00:40.46]It will be safer in my hands than in yours."
[00:41.46]10  Albert moved to a chair and sat down heavily.
[00:36.06]"I swear I'm going to raise the devil with the management this time;
[00:37.06]I am angry," he said.
[00:38.06]"This is the second time in a month
[00:39.06]that somebody has gotten into my room off that damn balcony!"
[00:40.06]11  Charles's eyes went to the single window of the room.
[00:41.06]It was an ordinary window;
[00:42.06]outside was utter blackness.
[00:43.06]12  "Balcony?" Max asked curiously,
[00:44.06]"No, I had a key.
[00:45.06]I did not know about the balcony.
[00:46.06]It might have simplified things had I known about it."
[00:47.06]13  "It's not my balcony," explained Albert angrily.
[00:48.06]"It belongs to the next apartment. You see," he said.
[00:49.06]"this room used to be part of a large unit,
[00:50.06]and the next room used to be the living room.
[00:51.06]It had the balcony, which extends under my window now.
[00:52.06]You can get into it from the empty room next door,
[00:53.06]and somebody did, last month."
[00:54.06]14  Max waved the gun with a commanding gesture.
[00:55.06]"Please sit down," he said.
[00:56.06]"We have a wait of half an hour, I think."
[00:57.06]15  "Thirty-one minutes," Albert said, in a bad mood.
[00:58.06]"The appointment was for twele-thirty.
[00:59.06]I wish I knew how you learned about the report, Max."
