[00:06.37]Dialogue
[00:07.16]Dialogue 1:
[00:12.12]--Is that the Manager?
[00:12.19]--Speaking. Can I be of any assistance?
[00:14.39]--Could you speed up your switchboard a bit, please? I booked a call to Brussels a good twenty minutes ago and I haven't had a reply yet.
[00:20.16]--Well, perhaps they are rather busy at this time of the day. After all, we are an hour ahead of Belgium.
[00:24.60]--I know that, but I could have dialed myself direct in no time at all.
[00:28.18]--We do like to route the calls through the operator and then
[00:31.18]there can be no misunderstanding about the charges, I'm sure you understand.
[00:34.21]--No, I suppose it would be difficult to check the cost of directly-dialed calls,
[00:38.13]but nevertheless I do have to put through an important call to Brussels.
[00:41.42]--I'll get on to them myself and see what the delay is, then call you back as soon as I know anything.
[00:47.59]Dialogue 2:
[00:51.90]--And what seems to be the trouble, sir?
[00:55.35]--They don't want to let me into the nightclub.
[00:57.41]--Well, I'm afraid there is an entrance charge, sir.
[00:59.74]--But damn it all--I am a resident. It's ridiculous.
[01:03.16]--I'm very sorry, sir, but you see it is something of a special evening.
[01:06.63]Our guest star this evening is Sammy Davis Junior and I'm afraid that the tickets do cost 250 marks each.
[01:12.95]I could see if there are any left if you would like one.
[01:16.22]We generally try to keep a few back for theresidents.
[01:18.52]Good Lord. That's nearly thirty-five pounds.
[01:20.87]No, on second thoughts, I don't think I'll bother.
[01:23.19]Could you have them send up a bottle of scotch to my room. I'11 entertain myself instead.
[01:27.50]--Very good, sir. That is room 634, isn't it?
[01:33.20]Dialogue 3:
[01:37.51]Good evening, sir. I'm the Assistant Manager. How nice.
[01:41.06]Yes, I'm afraid we've had a complaint about the noise from your neighbor across the corridor.
[01:45.42]He's trying to get some sleep as he has an early start tomorrow.
[01:48.61]I'm sure you understand.
[01:49.89]---Oh, I see.
[01:51.01]Do you think it might be possible to ask your friends to be a little quieter?
[01:54.38]We do like to give our guests a chance of getting a good night's sleep.
[01:57.73]It is well after eleven.
[01:59.32]Oh, I'm so sorry. I do apologize. I suppose we were talking rather loudly.
[02:04.05]It's just that we've signed a very important contract. We were having a bit of a celebration.
[02:09.20]I'm pleased to hear it. Shall I ask Room Service to' bring you some coffee?
[02:12.70]No, that won't be necessary. We were just about to pack up anyway.
[02:16.88]Thank you, sir, and good night to you.
[02:21.26]Dialogue 4:
[02:26.85]---Could I see the Manager, please? I have a complaint.
[02:30.17]---Can I help you, madam?
[02:31.61]--Yes. Did you have this room checked before we moved in?
[02:34.72]There's not a scrap of lavatory paper and the toilet doesn't flush properly,
[02:38.48]the water doesn't run away in the shower and I would like an extra pillow.
[02:42.19]What have you to say to that?
[02:43.60]--I'm extremely sorry to hear that. Iqattend to it fight away.
[02:46.76]The housekeeper usually checks every room before new guests move in.
[02:50.44]We have been extremely busy with a large conferen.
[02:53.08]--That's no way to run a hotel. One doesn't expect this sort of thing in a weB-mn hotel.
[02:57.23]--No, madam. I do apologize. It's most unusual.
[03:00.42]We do try to check the rooms as thoroughly as possible.
[03:03.97]Just the one pillow, was it? Is there anything else?
[03:06.77]--WEB, your thermostatically--controlled air-conditioning doesn't seem to be wor -king too welt.
[03:11.16]It's as hot as hell up there.
[03:12.39]--I'11 just adjust the regulator for'you and I think you'll find it a little cooler in a short time.
[03:16.96]I'll also send someone along right away to look at the toilet and shower.
[03:23.28]Section Two:

[03:52.80]So ... what about America? New York from 199 pounds.
[03:57.55]Or Canada? Or Hawaii? Ah ... Hawaii. And from only 372 pounds.
[04:04.60]Or the beautiful Bahamas? From just four hundred pounds.
[04:09.02]Nearer home we suggest Wales or Scofiand.
[04:12.81]And if you would like an easy package holiday, you could visit Minorca from 103 pounds,

[04:52.02]Peggy: Bob, can we really afford a holiday? We're paying for this house and the furniture is on HP and...
[04:59.36]Bob: Now listen, Peggy. You work hard and I work hard.
[05:04.16]We're not talking about whether we can have a holiday. We're talking about where and when.
[05:09.02]Peggy: Shall we go to Sweden?
[05:11.24]Bob: Sweden's colder than Sheffield. I'd rather not go to Sweden.
[05:15.55]Peggy: What about Florida? Florida's warmer than Sheffield.
[05:19.73]Bob: Yes, but it's a long way. How long does it take to get from tiere to Florida?
[05:24.25]Peggy: All right. Let's go to Hawaii.
[05:27.52]Bob: You must be joking. How much would it cost for the two of us?
[05:32.06]Peggy: But the brochure says the problem of money will disappear. Bob, where do you really want to go?
[05:38.88]Bob: I'm thinking of Wales or Scotland. Do you know why?
[05:43.43]Peggy: Yes. 'They're right on our doorstep and so close to home.'

[08:11.75]Travel Agent: It's a specially adapted bus with room for sleeping and ...

[08:38.75]Traveller: Oh, oh yes, I understand that. Now, how, how long in advance would I have to book?
[08:42.54]Travel Agent: Well, it depends. Usually six or eight months.
[08:45.49]It's amazing the number of people who are interested.
[08:47.97]Traveller: Well, I'm interested in the ten-week trip next spring.
[08:51.79]Travel Agent: Um, that one leaves on the fourth of April.
[08:54.40]Traveller: Yeah. That's right, yeah. It'll be for two people.
[08:56.72]Travel Agent: That'd be fine. Could you come in and we can go over all the details.
[08:59.96]Traveller: Yes, I think that'd be best, um, but can you give me some idea of how much that'll cost.
[09:04.06]Travel Agent: Spring for ten weeks ... Urn, we haven't got the exact figures at the moment,
[09:08.71]but, er, something like, er, 1,100 pounds per Person.

[09:17.54]Travel Agent: Yes. Thanks for ringing.
[09:18.90]Traveller: Thank you. Bye.
[09:19.53]Travel Agent: Bye bye.
[09:33.45]E. Tour of London:
[09:48.81]Woman: So you have a half day, a full day and a day and evening tour of London?
[09:52.08]Man: That's correct.
[09:52.60]Woman: Well, as we're only here for a few days, I think perhaps we should take the full day and evening tour.
[09:57.41]Give my children the opportunity to see everything.
[09:59.31]Man: Won't that be a bit tiring for them?
[10:00.78]Woman: Yes, you're right. It's probably better if we don't include them on the evening part of the program,
[10:05.97]Man: Not the theatre and the dinner entertainment?
[10:07.67]Woman: Yes, that's what I mean. The hotel will take care of them.
[10:10.52]Man: Yes, I'm sure that can be arranged.
[10:12.11]Woman: Now, can you tell me what the cost will be?
[10:14.67]Man: For the full tour? Seventy pounds per head.
[10:17.63]Woman: So that would be 140 pounds for myself and my husband.
[10:21.39]What about the children, is there any reduction for them?
[10:23.84]Man: Certainly, we have half price for children and if they're not going to the theatre or the dinner,
[10:27.87]I think we could let them have the full day tour for thirty pounds each.
[10:31.08]Woman: That's fine. Could you tell me more details of the tour?
[10:34.13]I mean, what will we be actually seeing and so forth?
[10:37.09]Man: Well, here's a brochure for you to read, but I can quickly run through the main items of the tour with you.
[10:42.23]Now, as you see, you're picked up from your hotel at 8.30, so you must be sure to order an early breakfast.
[10:48.92]Woman: Yes ...
[10:49.70]Man: Then you're taken to see the Changing of the Guard and you'll see Buckingham Palace at the same time of course.
[10:55.42]After that you'll be taken down Whitehall to see the House of Parliament,
[10:54.42]Big Ben, you know the famous clock, and nearby Westminster Abbey.
[10:59.00]Now from there we have a river trip down the Thames towards the Tower of London.
[11:04.06]During the river trip you'll be provided with sandwiches and coffee, orange juice for the kiddies.
[11:09.42]When you get to the Tower, you'll see the Beefeaters, the traditional guards of the Tower and then you'll be shown the Crown jewels.
[11:15.37]Woman: And will we have a guide during all this?
[11:14.37]Man: Of course. There's an official guide who will explain the sights to you and give a short account of their historic associations in three languages,
[11:21.40]English, German and French. If you have any further questions he'll be only too pleased to answer them.
[11:27.20]Woman: Oh, that sounds perfect.
[11:28.98]Man: Now in the afternoon, you'll be taken to London Zoo for a couple of hours.
[11:32.01]We try to arrange this to coincide with the monkeys' tea party. The children always enjoy that.
[11:37.44]Woman: Oh, I'm sure mine will.
[11:38.72]Man: And from there we just go round the corner to Madame Tussaud's to see the waxworks and after that fight next door to
[11:45.02]the London Planetarium where you'll see the stars simulated by laser beams.
[11:49.85]Woman: That sounds very exciting. What a full day.
[11:53.01]Man: Yes, well we do let you have a couple of hours' rest before taking you on to the theatre and dinner in the evening.
[11:58.55]Woman: Oh, that's good. I'Il be able to get the children off to bed or settled down watching television or something.
[12:04.03]Well, that sounds marvellous. Thank you very much.
[12:06.54]Man: Not at all. Er ... there is just one thing, madam.
[12:09.81]Woman: Oh, what's that?
[12:10.85]Man: The cheque.
[12:11.69]Woman: (laughs) Of course.
[12:26.50]Section Three:
[12:29.66]Dictation.
[12:31.51]I have always been interested in making things.
[12:41.96]When I was a child I used to enjoy painting, but I also liked making things out of clay.
[12:58.97]I managed to win a prize for one of my paintings when I was fourteen.
[13:07.49]That is probably the reason that I managed to get into art college four years later.
[13:18.59]But I studied painting at first, not pottery.
[13:26.40]I like being a potter because I like to work with my hands and feel the clay,
[13:36.17]I enjoy working on a potter's wheel. I'm happy working by myself and being near my home.
[13:49.57]I don't like mass-produced things.
[13:56.28]I think crafts and craftspeople are very important.
[14:04.69]When I left college I managed to get a grant from the Council, and I hope to become a full-time craftswoman.
