LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Disney's animal comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" opened at the top of box office in North America, with its 29 million dollars of ticket sales marking the studio's best October debut ever, preliminary figures showed Sunday.

    The film tells a story about a spoiled Beverly Hills female Chihuahua dog, who accidentally finds herself lost in Mexico and must rely on some new friends, including a street-hardened German Shepherd and an amorous pup, on her incredible journey back home.

Dreamworks/Paramount's thriller "Eagle Eye" had minimum drop-off in its second week of release, and was in second place with 17.7 million dollars over the weekend, according to Los Angeles-based box office tracking firm Media By Numbers.

    "Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist," a comedy drama from Sony Pictures about two teenagers ends up their first date while going on an all-night quest to find their favorite rock band's secret show, enjoyed the next-best opening after "Chihuahua," was on track to take in 13 million dollars, good enough to open in third place.

    Warner Bros.' middle-age love story "Nights in Rodanthe" was in fourth place, taking in 7.4 million dollars over the three-day period in its second weekend of release, followed by western "Appaloosa" from the same studio with 5 million dollars
