LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- British director Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" on Sunday won the top prize at the 66th annual Golden Globe Awards.

    "Slumdog Millionaire," a love story about a young man from the troubled slums of Mumbai who finds success on a television game show in India, was named the best drama motion picture over fellow nominees "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road."

    The film, which was the top award-winner of the night, also won best director for Danny Boyle, best screenplay for Simon Beaufoy and original score for A.R. Rahman.

    Earning one of the largest ovations of the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Mickey Rourke, won best actor for his role in "The Wrestler."

    Meanwhile, British actress Kate Winslet won two Golden Globes, one for best dramatic actress in "Revolutionary Road," and the other for best supporting actress in "The Reader."

    Sunday night's ceremony also gave Hollywood a chance to bid a fond farewell to the late actor Heath Ledger, who posthumously won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for his role as The Joker in "The Dark Knight." Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in New York about a year ago.

    Sally Hawkins won best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in comedy "Happy-Go-Lucky," while Colin Farrell was named best actor in the comedy category for his work in independent film" In Bruges."

    The Woody Allen film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" won best musical or comedy motion picture. It beat out "Burn After Reading," "Happy-Go-Lucky," "In Bruges" and "Mamma Mia!"

    Hollywood veteran director Steven Spielberg received the Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.

    The Golden Globe Awards are often promoted as an early indicator of who will win at the Academy Awards show, which is scheduled for Feb. 22.
