LOS ANGELES, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Disney/Pixar's animated comedy "Up" flew high over other films to dominate the box office this weekend in North America with an estimated 68.2 million dollars over the three-day period, according to figures released on Sunday.

The latest Pixar film marked the third biggest opening weekend after "The Incredibles" and "Finding Nemo" with 70.5 million and 70.3 million dollars receptively. It also became Pixar's tenth film to debut as No. 1 for its opening weekend.

The 3-D animated film, about a lonely widower who ties balloons to his house and flies away for an adventurous trip, swamped last week's box office leader "Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" to a distant second place with about 25.5 million dollars.

The 20th Century Fox comedy sequel, starring Ben Stiller and targeting the same family moviegoers, has grossed about 105.3 million dollars in the United States and Canada since it opened two weeks ago.

Universal Pictures' horror film "Drag Me To Hell," the only other new wide release this weekend, was No. 3 with 16.6 million dollars in ticket sales.

Rounding out the five most popular films this weekend in North America are "Terminator Salvation" from Warner Bros. and "Star Trek" from Paramount, with 16.1 million and 12.8 million dollars respectively. The two sci-fi sequels have taken in about 90.7 million and 209.5 million dollars respectively since they were released.
