LOS ANGELES, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Heavily marketed comedy "Bruno," a follow-up to the hugely successful "Borat" in 2006, opened at top of the box office in North America this weekend with an estimated 30.4 million dollars, according to preliminary figures released on Sunday.

The film, distributed by Universal and starring British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, tells the story of an outrageous Austrian gay fashion TV journalist who travels in the United States in search of fame.

"Bruno" beat the 26.5 million dollars earned by Cohen's "Borat" in its opening weekend. In the 2006 surprising hit, the comedian played a Kazakh journalist seeking his sexual fantasy about a Hollywood actress when traveling across the United States.

Animated adventure "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" was No. 2 film over the weekend with 28.5 million dollars. The 20th Century Fox film did well over its second weekend in release, and has grossed 120.6 million dollars in North America and 312.5 million dollars globally.

Last week's box office leader "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from DreamWorks was third with about 24.2 million dollars for the weekend. The robot action sequel has taken in 339.2 million dollars in North America and 672.3 million dollars worldwide since its release three weeks ago.

Rounding out the weekend's top five movies are Johnny Depp's gangster film "Public Enemies" and romantic comedy "The Proposal," with 14.1 million dollars and 10.5 million dollars respectively over the three-day period.
