娱乐英语新闻:V-J Day kissing nurse passes away: family

LOS ANGELES, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Edith Shain, the white- clad young nurse who was immortalized by a picture depicting that she was getting kissed by a jubilant sailor 64 years ago in Times Square in the New York City, has passed away in Los Angeles on Sunday June 20, her family announced on Tuesday.

On August 14,1945 during the Victory Over Japanese(V-J) Day parade,a young Shain, who was a New York hospital nurse, let an American sailor grabbed her and kissed her, thinking that she might as well let him to do so as the sailor had fought for her in the war. The scene was photographed by famed photographer Alfred Eisenstadt and has become an icon of the World War II. Shain took part in the 50th Anniversary of V-J Day in August of 1995 and had been known as a famous figure.

The famous picture has captured "an epic moment in American history, one that inspired patriotism, unity, joy and a spontaneous national pride in victoriously ending the war," Shain' s son Michael Shain said.

Shain had been a registered nurse, kindergarten teacher and public access cable television producer who participated in many veteran memorial events.

Shain is survived by three sons, six grand children and eight great grandchildren.
