娱乐英语新闻:Mexico asks for former TV producer's extradition over wife's murder charge

LOS ANGELES, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Mexican authorities on Tuesday formally asked the United States to turn over a former reality show producer to face the charge of murdering his wife more than two months ago, thus opening the formal extradition process, local television channel reported.

The U.S. State Department will review the facts and decide whether to authorize a formal extradition request from the Mexican prosecutors, as Mexico has formally requested the suspect's extradition, KTLA 5 reported on its website.

Bruce Beresford-Redman has returned to Los Angeles some two weeks ago although he was ordered by Mexican government to remain in the country waiting for the end of the investigation into his wife, Monica Beresford-Redman's death.

Mexican Federal Police stand guard outside the coroner's office, where the body of Monica Beresford-Redman is being held, in Cancun April 8, 2010. Mexican police arrested Monica's husband Bruce Beresford-Redman, a former producer of the U.S. TV series "Survivor," on Thursday and said he was the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, found strangled in the Mexican resort of Cancun. The bruised body of Monica was found dumped in mangroves near a luxury Caribbean beach hotel after going missing on Monday.

On June 1, Beresford-Redman issued a statement declaring his innocence: "Monica was the axis around which our whole family revolved. From her sisters and parents to my parents and of course to our children and me, she was everything to us."

The 38-year-old Emmy-nominated producer of "Survivor" and MTV's "Pimp My Ride" told police and relatives on April 6 that Monica never made it back to the hotel after a solo shopping excursion the day before. Her naked body was found two days later in a sewer at the lavish Hotel Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico, where the couple had been staying for holiday with their two children. The day would be her 42nd birthday.

A judge in Mexico issued an arrest warrant May 31 for the producer over the death of Monica, according to KTLA 5. Evidence in the murder case against Beresford-Redman includes unspecified testimony by hotel employees and tourists, and contradictions by Beresford-Redman, a Mexican prosecutor said.

Earlier, Beresford-Redman's lawyer Richard Hirsch had said the award-winner producer would resist the extradition bid.
