BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Celebrity news is pretty much the same wherever you go and could be basically characterized as sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll or movies. One cultural difference that deserves mention, however, is the predilection for Chinese celebrities to secretly marry each other and only admit it when they eventually break up.

Joining the club, reportedly, is Ken Chu of the boy band F4, who has cut the ties that bind with actress Kelly Lin. According to Southern Metropolis Weekly, the pair got hitched in Tokyo last year. At a recent press conference, a reporter asked Chu the seemingly innocuous question: "What will you be buying your wife for Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day)?" - which fell on Monday.

"What did you call Lin Hsi-lei (Kelly Lin)?" an incensed Chu screamed at the reporter in response. "I'll sue you for your groundless words! You don't have to respect me, but you must respect women!"

On Chu's microblog, the star had previously tacitly admitted the breakup with Lin by saying: "I betrayed you, and I betrayed myself."

Earlier this year, Charlene Choi of the Hong Kong singing duo Twins admitted she and actor Ronald Cheng had secretly wed four years ago in Los Angeles, at a press conference to announce their divorce - which would normally be a case of putting the horse before the cart.

Happily married Hollywood legend Robert De Niro visited Beijing for the first time last week and was shown around by Jiang Wen. De Niro is said to be a fan of the director's new movie, Let the Bullets Fly, starring Chow Yun-fat and Carina Lau, and will be giving advice on how to make the final cut more accessible to audiences in the United States.

Jiang took De Niro out for a 67th birthday dinner celebration on Tuesday at the Great Wall. According to various sources, he got the DJ to play the theme music from The Godfather, at which point the American actor did an elegant waltz with his wife.

De Niro shows no sign of slowing down and will next be seen on the screen in the action adventure movie Machete, after which he is set to play a professor in the Italian romance film Manual of Love.

In contrast, the relatively youthful Hong Kong actress Karena Lam is said to be drawing the curtains on her career. The 31-year-old has not renewed her contract/did not get her contract renewed after appearing in Lover's Discourse and the 3D movie Don Quixote.

Sina is reporting that Lam, who was born in Canada but started her career at the tender age of 15 in Taiwan and became a singing and acting star in Hong Kong, will retire and resume her academic studies. The news agency added she would return to Canada to live with her parents.

Finally, actor Huang Xiaoming and model Angelababy's romance appears to be floundering, according to a XINmsn report. The pair met up at Beijing Capital International Airport earlier this week and were seen arguing in the car park, before taking separate vehicles to his villa.
