娱乐英语新闻:"Little Fockers" beats "True Grit" to be No.1 at box office
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Universal Studio's comedy " Little Fockers" has notched a win over the Academy Award favorite "True Grit" over the Christmas weekend, taking in 34 million dollars in ticket stub sales in North America box office, although it failed to beat the opening record set by the original "Fockers" movie about six years ago.
Although both films were released on Wednesday to benefit from the long Christmas weekend, "Little Fockers," the third installment on the "Fockers" franchise, outperformed "True Grit," a Coen Brothers' retooling of the 1969 classic western starring Jeff Bridges. The latter brought in 25.6 million dollars and was No.2 at the box office derby.
Cast members (L-R) Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, and Jessica Alba arrive at the premiere of the movie "Little Fockers" in New York December 15, 2010. |
"Little Fockers" received a mediocre B- from CinemaScore. According to Universal studio, 57 percent of the audience was female and 53 percent was under 30 years old. The performance of the Ben Stiller-driven sequel pales when compared to the 70.5 million dollars five-day total of "Meet the Fockers" in 2004, the North America box office authority said, but the film should have no problem breezing past the 100 million dollars mark.
Disney's 3-D sci-fi actioner "Tron: Legacy," which also puts Jeff Bridges in the lead, was shoveled to the third place, ending with 20.1 million dollars, with a cumulative of 88 million dollars in two weeks.
Rounding out the top 10 most popular films over the weekend are:
-- No.4: "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," Fox, 10.8 million dollars this week, and 63.9 million dollars in two weeks;
-- No.5: "Yogi Bear," Warner Bros., 8.8 million dollars this week, and 36.8 million dollars in two weeks;
-- No.6: "The Fighter," Paramount, 8.5 million dollars this week, 27.6 million dollars in three weeks;
-- No.7: "Gulliver's Travels (2010)," Fox, opened at 7.2 million dollars;
-- No.8: "Black Swan," Fox Searchlight, 6.6 million dollars this week, for a four-week total of 29 million dollars;
-- No.9: "Tangled," Disney, 6.5 million dollars this week, 143. 8 million dollars in five weeks; and
