LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A surgery to amputate much of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor's right leg was successful and there were no complications, the doctors who carried out the operation said Friday.

The amputation, which was done at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center earlier in the day due to persistent blood clots and an infection that permeated the bone, involved removing three-quarter of Gabor's leg, according to doctors.

Gabor, 93, the last of the three glamorous Gabor sisters active in the 50s, was taken to the hospital to see if the amputation could be avoided, but doctors decided later the surgery was necessary.

Gabor, believed to be 93 and in ill health since July when she broke her hip, was admitted to hospital in Los Angeles on Jan 2, 2011 to undergo a partial amputation of her right leg after she has been infected by a lesion that turned gangrenous, her husband Frederic Prinz von Anhalt told Reuters.

"This is a very dangerous operation for someone her age," Publicist John Blanchette said. "But she will die otherwise."

The actress was expected to remain under close observation at the hospital, and there was no immediate word on when she would be released.

Gabor, in her advanced age, fell out of bed and broke her hip July 17. She underwent hip-replacement surgery and was sent home about a month later. She went back to the hospital two days later after developing blood clots. She was also brought back to the hospital Aug. 31 after her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt found her unresponsive.

Born Sari Gabor in Budapest, Hungary, Gabor was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936. She made her first movie appearance as a supporting actress in "Lovely to Look At" after she arrived in the United States about 1941. The actress appeared in several other films including John Huston's version of "Moulin Rouge" and Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil."

She has married to nine husbands including hotel magnate Conrad Hilton and actor George Sanders.
