COOPERATION FOR GLOBAL BENEFIT

Another important gauge of the future success of China-U.S. relations is their cooperation in regional and international issues.

During his visit, President Hu offered new guidance for China-U.S. cooperation in this regard.

First, both sides should intensify communication and consultation, and deepen coordination and cooperation in addressing global challenges and international and regional hotspot issues.

Second, they should pursue global cooperation as partners to fulfill common responsibilities and meet common challenges.

The two sides are expected to enhance consultation and coordination on issues like the Doha Round global trade talks, climate change, energy and resources security, food security and public health security through bilateral and multilateral channels, maintain dialogue and exchanges on regional security, regional cooperation and hotspot issues, and work together for a more equitable, just, inclusive and better-managed international system.

Third, both sides should stay committed to promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region, engage in open and inclusive regional cooperation, and turn the Asia Pacific into an important region where China and the United States work closely with each other on the basis of mutual respect.

Hu's proposal that China and the United States should pursue global cooperation as partners was echoed by Obama's unreserved agreement.

Meanwhile, analysts held that China-U.S. cooperation on global and regional issues was in the fundamental interest of the two peoples and all humanity for the following reasons:

-- China and the U.S. are committed to the final goal of a world free of nuclear weapons. They will also join hands to tackle nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism.

-- The two countries are devoted to the stability of the Korean Peninsula and the solution of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Given that the situation of the Korean Peninsula will continue to be a major regional and global concern for a long time, China and the United States will work with other concerned parties for an early resumption of the six-party nuclear disarmament talks.

-- Both sides have vowed to seek a solution to the Iranian nuclear issue. The settlement of the issue is a slow progress as the West has accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of civilian use while Tehran has always denied such charges. How to break the impasse is a difficult question for China, the United States and other relevant parties. Both countries should agree that Iran has the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy while insisting it fulfil its international obligations.

-- China and the United States are committed to addressing climate change. Both countries play important roles in tackling global warming, an issue that bears on the existence and development of humanity. In their efforts to seek a breakthrough on the issue, the two sides should adhere to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, the Bali Roadmap and the Copenhagen agreement, as well as the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Besides, China-U.S. cooperation also enjoys great potential in: countering violent extremism; strengthening nuclear security; eliminating infectious disease and hunger; ending extreme poverty; countering piracy; preventing and mitigating disasters; addressing cyber-security; fighting transnational crime; and combating human trafficking.

Hu's U.S. visit gave powerful impetus to the development of China-U.S. ties. Looking into the future, the two countries can build a healthy and stable bilateral relationship as long as they work in concert with each other. The visit ushered in a new era in China-U.S. relations that will benefit not only the two peoples but also peace and prosperity for the whole world.
