体坛英语新闻:Real Madrid humiliated in King's Cup early exit
Real Madrid spent over 250 million Euros on players over the summer, but went out 4-1 on aggregate to a side that plays in the third tier of Spanish soccer and which has a total annual budget of around 1 million Euros.
A large part of the damage had been done two weeks ago when Real lost the first leg of the tie 4-0 away to Alcorcon.
However, with the team playing the return leg in front of a packed fans in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, it was expected that Manuel Pellegrini's side would go close to overturning the first leg deficit.
Nothing could have been further from the truth. Despite fielding a side that was virtually his first choice 11, Pellegrini could only watch as Real failed to make any impression on their spirited opponents, who were playing the biggest game of their lives.
It was not until the 82nd minute of the game that Real finally opened the scoring thanks to Rafael Van der Vaart, but by then it was far too late to have any chance of adding the three extra goals needed to take the match into extra time.
The game ended with the fans in Bernabeu undecided whether or not to applaud the Alcorcon players or to boo their own.
Finally they decided to direct their anger on coach Manuel Pellegrini, whose job once again is in the balance after one of the most humiliating nights ever witnessed in the Bernabeu.
