体坛英语新闻:South African police fire grenade as FIFA security Guards continued protest: TV
JOHANNESBURG, June 17 (Xinhua) -- South African police fired a stun grenade on Thursday as the FIFA security guards for Cape Town's stadium continued protest, according to a TV report.
The latest police move came as South African national police commissioner General Bheki Cele said on Thursday that police will provide security until the end of the tournament at the four FIFA World Cup stadiums hit by strikes. No spectators or players at FIFA World Cup matches have been disrupted by the strike as South African police have taken over all abandoned duties.
South African police would also stay on at the international broadcast center adjacent to Soccer City, the country's main stadium in Johannesburg, Cele told a media briefing in Cape Town.
According to the South African Press Association (SAPA), Cele identified South African form Stallion Security as the contractor at all stadiums where strikes had occurred.
South African police on Tuesday took over the security of the inner perimeters of Moses Mabhida stadium, in Durban, Greenpoint Stadium, in Cape Town, and Soccer City and Ellis Park, in Johannesburg.
They did so after strike action by security guards and stewards over wages. Cele said if there were disruptions at any other FIFA World Cup stadiums, the South African police would be ready to take over there as well.
