体坛英语新闻:Capello: Rooney is special for England
JOHANNESBURG, June 26 (Xinhua) -- England coach Fabio Capello said on Saturday that England are counting on Wayne Rooney to break his World Cup drought against Germany on Sunday.
"Rooney has been training very well scoring a lot of goals," Capello said. "We hope tomorrow will be the same."
The Italian stressed that the striker's importance to England goes way beyond goal scoring.
"He is very important to us for our play, for his assists," Capello added.
England captain Steven Gerrard also expressed his confidence towards Rooey. "I think the pressure is not just on Wayne but on the whole team. Top players though, also put pressure on themselves and I'm sure Wayne has been doing that when he is by himself," Gerrard said.
"It's only a matter of time before he (Rooney) scores, and we are looking forward to that," the England captain added.
The 24-year-old Rooney has scored 25 times for his country, but has yet to score in the World Cup, including the 2006 edition in Germany, where he made his debut, and in England's three first round games in South Africa.
