体坛英语新闻:Corinthians draw 1-1 against Goias
RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Corinthians soccer team was only able to produce a 1-1 draw with home team Goias on Sunday in the last round of the 2010 Brazilian Championship.
The club was hopeful of a miracle in order to win this year's tournament. However, it failed and Fluminense defeated Guarani 1-0, maintaining its leadership and won the title.
Goias jumped out to an early lead in the 19th minute. Off a defense error from Julio Cesar, Felipe Amorim picked up on the loose ball and quickly fired the ball into the open Corinthians net.
Corinthians tied the match in the 29th minute. Off a great pass from Elias to a wide-open Dentinho, the striker easily pushed the ball into the right side of the Goias goal. However, the team was unable to score again, leading to an unfortunate draw.
The result drops Corinthians from second place to third, ending the tournament with 68 points. The team trailed first-placed Fluminense who had 71 points and second-placed Cruzeiro with 69 points.
Goias suffered relegation due to their performance in this year's tournament, finishing in 19th place with 33 points.
The team will play in the second division of the 2011 Brazilian Championship. However, the team remains alive in the South American Cup and will face Argentina's Independiente on December 9.
