国际英语新闻:Opposition responsible for violence in Moldova: president

2009-04-11来源:和谐英语
CHISINAU, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The responsibility for violence in the center of Chisinau entirely falls on those political parties that doubted the results of the polls, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said on Friday.

The president made the remarks at his first briefing after the devastation of the presidential institution.

Voronin described the violent protests on Tuesday as an attempt of coup d'etat, aimed against the legal power, national democratic institutions and the European values.

He said that the concerned attempt was thoroughly prepared both by the opposition leaders and representatives of other structures, including criminal ones. He considers as absurd the accusations that such vandalism acts were organized by the government, stressing that the opposition tries to deny responsibility for the violence.

Voronin emphasized the need to carry out a competent inquiry as regards the forms and ways in which Romanian citizens participated in the preparation of the Tuesday events.

According to the president, preliminary investigations show that three parliamentary opposition parties were given advice by the Romanian embassy in Moldova at the pre-election stages. Large groups of students were trained, and then placed in Moldova to participate in street actions. Also, Romanian citizens and specialists participated in the violence.

In a communique issued on Friday, Moldova's Security and Information Service (SIS) said that the violent actions and vandalism acts in Chisinau were coordinated by foreign forces that attempted to organize a coup d'etat by involving criminal elements in this process.

The SIS said that these actions did not appear spontaneously, but were premeditated and well-thought many months before the event occurred.

The SIS expressed its deep worry about "the substantial attempts contained in media resources from Romania and those loyal to them to influence the international public opinion with anti-state and anti-Moldovan messages, while instigating to this end Moldova's citizens, especially those who study in Romania."

In his Friday remarks, President Voronin thanked the European Union, Russia, the United States and the Commonwealth of Independent States member countries for the assessments regarding the events that occurred in Chisinau over the last days.

Meanwhile, the president said that the recounting of the votes will allow overcoming the difficult situation in which the Moldovan democracy found itself, and will create pre-requisites for the new parliament to work in conditions of stability and trust.

Parliamentary elections were held in Moldova on Sunday. International electoral observers considered the poll roughly up to international standards, but the opposition claimed the vote was rigged.

Violent protests broke out in the capital city of Chisinau after the Central Election Commission announced on Monday that the ruling Communist Party won a landslide victory. Protesters stormed the parliament and the presidential building on Tuesday.

Voronin earlier on Friday asked the Constitutional Court to allow the recounting of the votes, to create fundamental conditions for the stable functioning of the newly-elected parliament.
