国际英语新闻：Indonesia announces final result of legislative polls

JAKARTA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Electoral Commission (KPU)announced the final result of legislative election on April 9 on Saturday evening.

    The chairman of the commission Abdul Hafiz Anshari said that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democrat Party took a lead with votes obtained 20.85 percent of total votes, followed by Golkar party 14.45 percent, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle 14.04 percent, Properous and Justice Party (PKS) 7.88 percent and the National Mandate Party (PAN) 6.01 percent.

    The total valid votes were about 104 million out of 121 million votes cashed to the ballot stations, he said at the headquarters of the commission.

    The figure indicates that of eligible voters who did not cash their votes is high at the polls, as the total number of eligible voters are over 171 millions.

    As the poll results shows no single majority, a coalition is needed to field candidate in the presidential polls on July 8.

    Earlier, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who is the chairman of Golkar Party has declared to pair with a former general Wiranto, chairman of the People's Conscience Party (Hanura).

    Former President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is the chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), is believed to be the strongest rival of President Susilo, has yet determine her mate.

    Over 38 national political parties and six local parties in Aceh province contest at the recent legislative polls.
