国际英语新闻：Obama: U.S. to strengthen cooperation with Kuwait

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday met with Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, emir of Kuwait, at the White House, pledging to further cooperation with the gulf Arab country.

    "We are looking to make those relations even stronger," Obama told reporters before having talks with the Kuwaiti top leader.

"Kuwait has been an outstanding host for the United States Armed Forces during its operations in Iraq. And as we transition our operations in Iraq, it's important for us to emphasize not only our gratitude to Kuwait, but also our ongoing commitment to Kuwait's security," Obama said.

    Obama expressed belief that "based on this conversation and ongoing work between our two countries, that we can strengthen not only Kuwaiti-U.S. relationships, but also to create a more stable region of peace and security in the region."

    The United States has announced that it will withdraw all its combat troops from Iraq by August 2010, with a complete pullout of all forces by December 2011.

    In response to Obama's remarks, Sabah pledged that Kuwait would remain an ally and partner of the United States. He also expressed support for the efforts in promoting Middle East peace process.

    "It is in our interest that peace be brought about," the Kuwaiti leader said.
