LONDON, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The British Conservative Party leader David Cameron on Sunday slashed Prime Minister Gordon Brown and vowed to beat the Labour Party in the general election.

Cameron said in the Tory spring conference, being held in Brighton, that five more years of Brown as prime minister would be a disaster, and his party has a duty to win the forthcoming general election.

"It is an election we have a patriotic duty to win because this country is in a complete and utter mess, and we have to sort it out," the Conservative leader added.

Acknowledging his party would face a real fight, Cameron insisted that he grew more confident every day and "I have got what it takes to turn this country around."

According to the YouGov poll published in the Sunday Times, the Conservative lead over Labour has narrowed to two points -- down from six points last week.

The British general election must be held by June, but it is widely expected to take place on 6 May.
