国际英语新闻:UN official calls for full implementation of resolution 1701
BEIRUT, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams called on Tuesday to " work much harder" to fully implement the UN resolution 1701.
Williams met with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri at the Grand Serial in downtown Beirut.
A statement released by the prime minister office said that the UN official discussed with Hariri his briefing on March 12 to the UN Security Council on the implementation of resolution 1701.
"There was strong support for Lebanon and for the full implementation of resolution 1701. We hope that all relevant parties will make progress on issues related to the resolution in the coming period," Williams said.
Asked about what should be done to see resolution 1701 fully implemented, the UN official stressed that "we all have to work even harder. Much has been achieved on that resolution, but there is much more that should be done."
Williams reiterated that "Israeli violation of Lebanese sovereignty is taking place on a daily basis."
The UN resolution 1701 was implemented in 2006 after a devastating war between Israel and Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah.
Lebanon accuses Israel of intruding its airspace on a daily basis, saying it is a violation of resolution 1701, while Israel accuses Hezbollah of rearming in the border area.
