MEXICO CITY, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The quake measuring 7.2 degrees on the Richter scale that struck northern Mexico state Baja California on Sunday was the worst since records began, the state governor said on Monday.

"The one in 1940 was the worst one ever recorded at 7.1 degrees, " Jose Guadalupe Osuna told local broadcasters. He listed the next worst at 6.9 degrees in 1979, followed by a quake of 6.6 degrees in 1987.

Osuna also said that the nation's President Felipe Calderon plans to visit Mexicali, the capital of the state that borders the U.S. state of California, in order to assess the damage.

Sunday's quake killed two people and injured at least 100 more. Osuna also canceled all classes in the state pending a revisin of school buildings for damage that might lead to more serious collapses.

State electricity provider the Federal Electricity Commission said in a separate statement that 11 of its 27 electricity substations in the state were back on line and that it had begun repairs on the remaining 16. Sunday's quake also cut off electricity supply to Imperial Valley, in California. The Mexican company has not resumed cross border sales.
