国际英语新闻：Blasts kill 35 in Iraq, warn new wave of violence

BAGHDAD, April 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 35 people were killed and 140 others injured after seven massive bomb attacks struck residential buildings in Baghdad on Tuesday, in the wake of Sunday 's deadly bombings, raising fears that current political turmoil could bring back sectarian strife and insurgency.

The massive coordinated explosions destroyed seven residential buildings in mostly Shiite neighborhoods, an Interior Ministry source said on condition of anonymity.

On Sunday, three suicide bombers detonated their explosive- laden cars within minutes of each other targeting foreign embassies in the Iraqi capital, killing 30 people and wounding 224 others, including security forces.

The first blast on Tuesday took place at about 8:45 a.m.(0545 GMT) in the Chikok area in Baghdad's northern neighborhood of Kadhmiya, causing the collapse of two residential buildings.

About 10 minutes later, another massive blast destroyed a third building in the Shula neighborhood in northwestern Baghdad, followed by another powerful explosion which hit a fourth residential building in the southwestern Shurta al-Rabia neighborhood.

A fifth explosion occurred when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive-belt inside a popular restaurant at Hifa street in central Baghdad, destroying the whole three-story building and burying an undetermined number of people under debris.

Two more powerful explosions ripped through Baghdad southern neighborhoods of al-Amil and Saidiyah, destroying two more residential buildings.

Ayad Allawi, the secular politician who made a slender lead in the latest March 7 elections, criticized the government as " incompetent" in confronting terrorist attacks.

"The government is not capable of stopping such attacks, I don' t know what is the reason behind that (incompetence) because the government supposed to have done more against the (deterioration of) security and stability during the past years," Allawi told reporters, as he was donating blood for the victims of the latest bombings on Tuesday.
