SANTO DOMINGO, April 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama arrived on Tuesday in Haiti by a U.S. Army helicopter, accompanied by Jill Biden, wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
Michelle Obama paid a surprise visit to Haiti, which was aimed to show the United States' long-lasting commitment to aid Haiti's recovery and reconstruction, the White House said in a statement.
Michelle Obama and Jill Biden were greeted by Haitian President Rene Preval and First Lady Elisabeth Preval in the National Palace.
They visited a children's care institute and a hospital in the Haitian capital, and Michelle Obama especially warned about the coming "rain and hurricanes season" in the country, which is still struggling to rebuild after the devastated earthquake on Jan. 12.
She also thanked "the U.S. men and women for their extraordinary efforts with Haiti" in the last three months.
