国际英语新闻:Icelandic capital starts emergency programs concerning volcanic ash
REYKJAVIK, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Reykjavik has started emergency programs for a possible return of ash to the capital city because a volcano that erupted last week remains active, Icelandic daily Visir reported Tuesday.
"Once there is any abnormal situation, there will be warnings and prevention information issued, but so far there is no need to take prevention measures," the daily reported.
The Reykjavik Health Supervision Sector has began to monitor air and water quality in the capital area.
It was reported that drinking water for Reykjavik comes from underground sources and would not be affected if any volcanic ash fell on the city.
Primary and middle schools and kindergartens were all informed with the emergency programs.
Meanwhile, Iceland's Civil Protection Department said there hasn't been any trace of lava coming out of the crater and the danger of flood is also minimal.
A volcanic eruption started under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland on Wednesday. Massive volcanic ash blocked air traffic in many European countries. Reykjavik, to the west of the glacier, has not been affected by the plume of ash because of winds that blew it in the opposite direction.
