国际英语新闻：Hungarian conservative Fidesz garners two-thirds majority in parliamentary elections

BUDAPEST, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The conservative Fidesz party garnered a two-thirds majority in the second round of Hungarian parliamentary elections on Sunday, topping a first round landslide election victory two weeks ago in an unofficial vote count.

Fidesz won 56 parliamentary seats in the second round, in addition to its first-round win of 206 seats. The party grabbed 262 parliamentary seats in all, more than the 258-seat supermajority needed to change many laws including the election law, local government law and media law, and to enact a law granting Hungarian citizenship to ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries, all of which it has vowed to do. The party now even has the power to amend the constitution.

The Socialist party, which had governed for the past eight years, won just two individual constituency seats, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction and leaving itself with only 59 seats in the parliament. Party chair Ildiko Lendvai announced her resignation and the entire party presidium plans to resign at the next party congress, scheduled for late May or early June.

The far-right Jobbik party came in the third with 47 seats while the small green LMP party won 16 seats. One seat was won by an independent candidate supported by the far-right Jobbik party, and another by an independent supported by Fidesz.

Just over 43 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots in an election that was largely decided after the first round, which ended with an absolute majority for Fidesz. Voter turnout in the first round was over 60 percent.
