国际英语新闻：Poll shows most Greeks feel more safe in eurozone while pessimistic for near future

ATHENS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The wide majority of Greek people with 77 percent support the Euro and reject an exit of Greece from the eurozone, according to a new poll published on Tuesday by Vima daily.

The 58.1 percent of people who took part in the survey conducted by Kappa Research said they feel more security because Greece is a member state of the European Union.

But still most of Greeks do not expect miracles in the short- term and an exit from the debt crisis soon. The 38.3 percent believe that it will take up to five years for Greece to fix the problem. About 27.4 percent of citizens estimated the "dark tunnel" will last five to 10 years, while 31.8 percent think that the country will stand again on its feet after more than a decade.

Despite denouncing the harsh austerity measures, about 42.3 percent Greek people are not willing to take part in the demonstrations, even though 67.8 percent said that they had felt the effect of the crisis on their family incomes and life- style.

Regarding changes in the life-style due to the crisis, 39 percent of Greeks said that they now seek more economic products and services, 38.5 percent buy only what is absolutely necessary to cover basic needs and nine percent replied that they have not made any changes yet.

About 32.8 percent blamed the previous center-right government of Kostas Karamanlis for the crisis, 10 percent think that the current socialist government of George Papandreou is to blame, while 55.2 percent said that both governments bear responsibility.

A 55.5 percent of Greeks estimated that the EU-IMF safety net will be enough to support the Greek economy out of the crisis while 32.5 percent still expressed agony that the country might not evade bankruptcy after all.

Some 56.7 percent citizens rejected suggestions by Left parties that Greece would re-negotiate its debt and delay payments to investors of Greek bonds.

Asked about their opinion of foreign leaders, mostly on Europeans, 79.9 percent of Greeks voiced rejection of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel due to Berlin's stance on the Greek debt crisis.

A 76.6 percent praised French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the other hand and 73.7 percent for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Greek citizens also expressed a positive opinion for U.S President Barack Obama with 68.2 percent, the Spanish Premier Jose Louis Zapatero at 64 percent, Turkish Prime Minister Rejep Tayip Erdogan at 32.9 percent, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at 31.1 percent and British leader Gordon Brown at 25.3 percent.
