国际英语新闻：Obama urges deepened U.S., Russian cooperation on anti-terrorism

MOSCOW, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The United States and Russia should beef up cooperation on common enemy such as terrorism, said U.S. President Barack Obama in an interview with Russian media.

Speaking in the Saturday analytical program on the Rossiya-1 television channel, Obama nailed terrorism as among security threats of uNPRecedented similarity facing the two countries, while taking the recent Moscow metro blasts and the attempted New York bombing attack as an example.

No country could fight against terrorism alone, said Obama, who also voiced hope that Washington and Moscow could further deepen collaboration on anti-terrorism, the essence of which should be chasing terrorists, busting their networks and depleting their financial sources.

During the interview Obama also condemned the stances on nuclear issue of Pyongyang and Tehran, as they failed to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency in defiance of international rules and UN Security Council resolutions.

Satisfied with cooperation between the U.S., Russia and other relevant parties on the Iranian nuclear issue, the U.S. president reiterated the necessity for sanctions against Iran as means to press the country for more rational choices.

As on the historic treaty on strategic arms reduction newly signed between the U.S. and Russia, Obama said his administration would submit the treaty and all necessary agenda and explanations to U.S. senators as soon as possible.

He also expected the treaty to be ratified before the U.S. Congress elections in November.

Obama meanwhile called on Russia and NATO to engage in "more systematic" consultations over security issue, and stressed that all European countries and NATO members hoped to develop mutually beneficial cooperation with their Russian counterpart.

However, he also named several key principles in such cooperation, including respect for territorial integrity of internationally recognized borders, the understanding that countries should choose their own allies, and denial of the so- called "spheres of influence."

Russia and the United States have been working on "resetting" their ties that sunk to post-Cold War lows under the Bush administration.
